it locked up, to the point that i had to hard reboot it. when it came back up, the wifi adapter was just gone. the ether adapter has never worked (for me, it was a handmedown, so i'm not sure if it worked for the previous owner), and my usb wifi fob won't work. presumably needs drivers, which i can't get until i get it to work. at least i have an older one that still functions fairly well, with one caveat (see question 2), so i'm not stuck mobile posting like some kind of child =p

so, two questions.

1, does anyone have any experience with a usb ethernet port? i'm assuming they'd be at least as good as wifi, but how do they compare to a hardware ether port? is a $15 one from ebay good enough? i was already considering grabbing one of these anyway, and if it'll solve two problems now instead of one i'll move it up my priority list.

2, assuming i just move back to the older one full time, can i move the SSD from the bad one to the working one? without reformatting it? i know this used to be a nono, but i'm about 20 years out of date. to both save the files i've accumulated, and to play a game that pretty much requires an SSD to function.

much thanks for any help.

Why can't you use the working computer to download drivers for the USB wifi that isn't working on the better comp?

You bought a computer that doesn't have an Ethernet port? Look what all that saved weight is doing for ya now.

1) USB ethernet adapters work just fine

2) You can move the SSD with no issues as long as its running the same OS and all of the files will be accessible, itll just show up as a new drive path on the other PC

The USB ethernet should work, but I believe is significantly slower max speed.

If you move the ssd you can see the files, but you can't boot from the ssd's OS on your old pc.

slower than the motherboard port would be, or slower than wifi?

even if it's moving from a Windows 10 setup to a Windows 7? the OSes aren't on the drive that's moving, so that's not an issue. so long as i copy any files i need to keep first, even if it doesn't work, the worst case scenario is that i have to just move it back, right? i can't actually damage the drive itself by trying?

The OS isn't important, just the filesystem the drive is using. It's Windows, so it'll be NTFS. In other words, your other computer will be able to read the files on the drive just fine. Just plug it in.

just to get the drivers? i don't know, but i doubt it. if it can't find my wifi, wouldn't that be the same for a hotspot?
