...prank.

this happened in 2020, and he was recently convicted for it:

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- A Corona man accused of killing three teenage boys by intentionally ramming their car after they played a doorbell-ringing prank on him was found guilty Friday of murder.

Anurag Chandra was convicted in a Riverside County courtroom of three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder.

"The murder of these young men was a horrendous and senseless tragedy for our community. I thank the jury for their verdict. This is an important step toward justice," county District Attorney Mike Hestrin said in a statement.

Chandra's attorney, David Wohl, did not immediately return a request for comment Friday.

The victims, who were all 16 years old, were among six teens inside a Toyota Prius on Jan. 19, 2020 when Chandra intentionally rammed their vehicle off the road and fled, prosecutors said.

The Prius' driver lost control and the sedan slammed into a tree in Temescal Valley.

The friends had dared one boy to either jump into a pool at night or play "ding dong ditch."

Chandra, who didn't know the teens, testified at trial that one of the boys rang his doorbell and exposed his buttocks before running away, according to The Riverside Press-Enterprise. Chandra testified that he followed because he feared for his family's safety and wanted to express his anger. He said he was "extremely, extremely mad" from the prank.

Chandra also testified that he drank 12 beers in the hours before the crash, the newspaper reported. He said he did not plan to crash into the Prius and testified that he did not stop after rear-ending the sedan because he did not realize anyone had been injured - even though he admitted under cross-examination that he had been driving 99 mph before the collision.

The crash killed Daniel Hawkins of Corona; Drake Ruiz of Corona; and Jacob Ivascu of Riverside, according to the Riverside County coroner's office.

Sergio Campusano was the Prius' 18-year-old driver at the time. He and then-13-year-olds Joshua Hawkins and Joshua Ivascu survived the crash. They testified at the trial and were in the courtroom when the verdict was read.

Chandra already was facing criminal charges in connection with alleged domestic violence in 2020 when the killings occurred.

So wait, the teens pranked him, so he leapt to his car to give chase and during that time he drank 12 cans of beer, or did he drink the beers after the teens had showed up and only then went to find them?
His story feels like an excuse anyhow.
"You must understand, their prank made me feel my family was in grave danger, and I was actually super drunk when I chose to chase the teens and ram them off the road so it really wasn't my fault, so pwetty pweease, feel sorry for me, I deserve a slap on the wrist so I can at a later date again kill someone because I have shit for brains."

It's insane how eager people are these days to kill others over what were the most stereotypical childhood pranks or innocent/frequent mistakes (such as pulling into a driveway briefly or accidentally getting into the wrong car) in the 90s.

Yeah, a cop would get away with it pretty easily but not a citizen. It'd also depend on if the victims are minorities or not.

Not excusing what he did, but I do feel kind of bad for him. Dude was sitting at home minding his own business polishing off a case of beer during the first days of Covid and suddenly teenage bullshit and buttcheeks are at your door. Especially if you're an angry drunk and terrified of the virus its easy to see someone way the fuck overreacting and exercising extremely poor judgment due to crushing a 12 pack during a pandemic.
Idk, just a tragedy on both ends really.

Hard disagree, it's hard to feel bad for a guy who thinks it's okay to not only drive drunk but smash into their car in a fit of rage as retaliation for a prank. I've always thought when somebody's drunk they're just more likely to be themselves.

12 beers though. Whether they're "themselves" or not, it's fair to say the average persons judgement is going to be piss poor and they're more likely to do something violent/aggressive after 12 beers.

Not defending him, I just find it kind of interesting and don't know that it's fair to view him through the same lens as someone who had 12 beers at the bar and said fuck it and drove home anyway and killed 3 people.

The difference here becomes intent. This man intentionally chased his car to ram into them. He intentionally wanted to cause harm. Someone who blacks out or is hallucinating because of inebriation are at least not intentionally meaning to cause harm, their state of impairment just created the conditions for such.

To use a different example, there's a difference between pointing a gun at someone and pulling the trigger, and shooting up in the air with the bullet randomly coming down and killing someone you don't even see.

In my own city, which is a border city, someone in Juarez fired a gun whose stray bullet struck someone in the leg of downtown El Paso. That person obviously wasn't trying to shoot them as cartel members who slaughter families intend.

For me the difference and what I'm hung up on is would he have done this or gotten as drunk if he were out in public? I feel like he was at home, in his safe space and (very very poorly) reacted to a situation he didn't create or ask for, a group antagonizing him.

Certainly the kids do deserve sympathy and we all did dumb shit like this, but times have radically changed and imo there should be an equal amount of energy dedicated to why prank culture needs to stop and our kids need to understand "stranger danger" goes faaaaaaaar beyond creepy dudes in vans these days. If you don't know someone, don't mess with them regardless of how harmless it may seem. 4 lives are now over because of a mooning gone horribly wrong.

It sounds like you're just trying to rationalize victim blaming. We have a few other stories floating around of people saying they would be willing to kill those who just ring the wrong doorbell or who pull off ding dong ditch, as well as people killing others for what used to be considered simple misunderstandings and mistakes.

The people willing to kill others so flippantly for infractions that were considered either standard 90s pranks or frequent misunderstandings (such as the people who accidentally pulled into the driveway, homeowner shot into their car even though nobody even got out of the car, killing one of them) are definitely the ones who are at fault and deserve to be addressed as the abhorrent monsters they are.

Telling women they should wear longer skirts or no skirts at all is not the solution, the solution is to address the rapist and their actions, to reference the most classic example of victim blaming.

I've seen enough stories about police shootings that I assume this phrase was used as part of a legal strategy to justify what he did as being self defence rather than murder.
