Mass shootings are the sacrifice for freedom? Are we really free if we need to be armed 24/7 that sounds like fear to me. Really shows you how dirty and fucked up this country is that everyone lives with the idea of gunning down the army incase they turn on us.or atleast thats the reason we absolutely positively must have AR15s legal. Its so dumb.

Gun culture is not an extension of America.
American culture is an extension of the gun.

That's it. We were founded by entitled people with guns who had been told they were being cheated. We forged our independence at the point of a rifle and have always held that a gun is essential for maintaining freedom / having personal strength and protection.

It's like looking at a polar bear and asking why the surrounding atmosphere is always cold. The weather didn't adapt to the animal. The animal evolved the way that it did because of its climate. In the case of America, guns are and always have been our bread and butter. We literally have more firearms than people.

My grandfather is a lunatic who keeps guns and ammo in the house.

Last night, he yelled at my aunt for alledgedly ordering the wrong pizzas on her phone.

The problem is that he has been forgetting things and hasn't been properly tested for dementia.

When I told him she was right because I remember he just agreed with the order before getting the pizzas, he told me, "if it you're saying that, then it must be wrong.".

I comforted my aunt who was clearly upset, then gave her some space since she didn't want to talk about it.

I'm worried he'll forget who we are at some point and shoot us thinking we're an intruder.

yeah the whole "we need guns to stand up against the government" thing might have worked back when the government and people had the same weapons. I dunno what people think they're gonna do if the army/marines really do mobilize and they have Bradleys rolling into town.

there's a reason we can't own anti-tank weapons. well, besides people just going around blowing up random cars.

Gun worshippers in America have been well trained by the GOP and NRA to throw absolute shitfits like children anytime there's even a whiff of a hint of a discussion of any form of gun control or even stronger regulation.

To them the ease of access to their toys is more important than the lives of children. They'll argue that they need the guns for defense, etc, but ultimately they just like guns and usually aren't that honest about that being the reasoning.

Ultimately American gun culture just sucks and it's so ingrained it's unlikely to ever change in any positive way.

no one thinks gun violence is OK. both sides just have differing methods on how to deal with it to the point that either nothing gets down or gets done badly (and allows for horrible precedence going forward).

and the UK and Japan never had a gun culture to begin with and in general they more clearly see their citizens as subjects rather than individuals which cuts down on what rights they have. with that (and i suppose on the flip side) their governments tend to offer more incentives for pacification which cuts down certain types of violence. if these things wernt in place, guns or not youd be seeing higher violence levels which in turn if the US had, despite all its guns you would see a lower degree on not just gun violence but violence in general. the guns are less of a problem than what laws are in place to its citizens that feels like they offer less of a branching off point and need for a future.

In the event of a civil war it probably wouldn't be armed citizens vs the military. It would probably be armed citizens + parts of the army vs other armed citizens + parts of the military. There are also limitations on how much of the fancy military tech they can use. If you start bombing your citizens you'll blow up the infrastructure that powers your war machine.
