Oh well their choice, I find it stupid but their life to live, I enjoy driving especially when you have great scenery and fun places to explore.

I am not a fan of long drives but that is what stopping for rest, food, and seeing different places as you go. If you are not have to do non stop driving or dont like it then dont do it.

-car insurance
-folliwing rules of the road
-dealing with aggressive drivers/self driving habits
-routinely maintaining your vehicle

All of which can go very wrong really quick if you overlook one of those

I dont mind driving necessarily, but I hate commuting. And I maybe spend a little under an hour on the road every day for work. Definitely better than what I used to do, but I still hate it.

But too bad Id have to be an actual hermit if I didnt drive anywhere because theres literally nowhere nearby to walk to.

Plus I do like the freedom of going where I want, when I want. So, fair trade off.

Side note- it amuses me how obsessed this board is with Zoomers

I'm not gen z; I'm a young millennial. I got my lisence about 8 years ago and basically haven't driven since.

driving carries significant ethical responsibility. if you hit a pedestrian, it is inherently your fault 100% of the time. it is your responsibility to be alert, follow all traffic laws (including speed limits), and be ready to slow down and stop at the slightest hint of erratic behavior from a pedestrian.

I don't drive primarily because I don't want to accept that responsibility.

I don't even know if I'm a millennial or a zoomer, but either way I will never drive.

I'd like to, it'd open up so many doors for me, but I am too terrified of getting behind the wheel of a car. The few times I've tried I've come super close to either having a full blown panic attack or just flat out passing out.

<_< the worst thing you can do behind the wheel is be overwhelmed with "what if"

Unless you've been in a bad accident, there should be nothing inherently scary or terrifying about driving.

You are in control. All you can and should worry about is what you can and should do behind the wheel.

Any other fear of other drivers is irrational until you see someone else driving erratically. If you never see them, it's not your fault.

I used to be scared of the idea of driving. It wasn't until I was forced to drive that I realized how silly my fear had been and I eventually grew to love driving.

And I grew up in an area with plenty of deer. It isn't uncommon to see them near the side of the road. I could have been terrified of hitting one, or I could realize that it isn't something to fear to the point of limiting myself just because of a "it could happen". My grandmother is that way and it is no way to live your life. In constant fear. Embrace the chaotic nature of life and do what you want. Don't let fear control you.

Public transportation is awful in a lot of places. And it is expensive. Driving brings freedom.
Young people not liking to drive is no news. But most will, as soon as they have a license.
If you have the money and the time, letting yourself be driven around is more comfortable.
Would go for that every time, but I am not wealthy enough. Ha ha ha.
And I ask you, can not wanting to drive be a form of laziness?

Learn to walk again is a slight exaggeration for comedic effect, but one leg got real fucked up. Broken femur and three ankle bones in the left leg. Titanium rod in the femur (which required opening up my knee and going under the knee cap), pins in the knee and hip, month in the hospital, few more months in a cast using a walker, then physical therapy for a while.

Some people either just haven't driven enough to become used to it or are terrible drivers prone to accidents that worry about harming themsevles or others.

I personally prefer to drive whenever possible. You can liston to music or videos if boredom is a issue.

Walking/biking also isn't consistently viable for most people even if they aren't far from most conveniences because the weather can get bad. Waiting in blazing heat, freezing snow/cold or pouring rain is not my cup of tea.

They are just too dumb, what do you expect from people who can only look at their smartphones?

The smartphones designed by the prior generation to be filled with addictive and convenient content specfically made to exploit us?

The prior generations sure love making problems and then blaming the kiddos for struggling with the issues they created.

"Why don't kids want to get married and have kids?"

Because we were surrounded by abusive parents and failed marriages.

Also cost of living is vastly higher then it usef to be. Its just not viable to have em.

"Why don't kids want to work/work hard"

Because we are more aware of how deeply we are exploited and that wealth inequality is far higher then prior generations. Companies are not loyal to us so why the fuck would we be loyal to then?

You failed to raise us well and create a world better then what it was before. Its all bread and circuses trying to hide the bleak future you set us up for. College is now a debt trap. Homes and cars are unaffordable. Democracy is backsliding. The planet is warming.

https://usafacts.org/data-projects/housing-vs-wages/

Look at this shit. In just a decade we have to work 20% more to afford a home.

The answer was making cities with good public transit that were safe to walk, and well designed in general.

You failed at that guess making car companies rich was more important.

You failed at that guess making car companies rich was more important.

I mean, the USA is massive, like incomprehensibly massive. If you want to go anywhere that isn't where you grew up, you have to have a car or take a train. Trains fell out of fashion, really. (Yes I'm aware of buses but those also aren't viewed well and you're still stuck to similar issues of taking a train)

The driveability of modern cities is a by-product of the Interstate Highway system. Cities that have popped up and/or grew massively in the past 80 years have had much of their expansion and design influenced by the fact that Interstates run near them. Combine that with how we get most of our deliveries (big rig trucking) and cities become reliant on making sure new streets and roads are traversable.

Europe was designed and lived in for millenia before the advent of cars and thus many of the big cities were designed with people and horse/buggy in mind. Short of bulldozing existing structures, the walkability of European cities is ingrained in the very DNA of said cities.

Very few American cities are walkable because they were designed and informed during the advent of cars, which the popularity of was boosted massively by how much the car connected disparate, far flung communities together. Add in the interstate highway system making it so anyone with time and money being able to go anywhere in the States that they want and it was a recipe for American cities to be driveable over walkable, well beyond just focusing on the profits of car manufacturers.

I hate driving.. so many of my jobs have been out of town. So I would drive an hour to get to work. I finally get full time and move into a place 20 minutes away. Then my job sends me to a satellite office, so I am back to driving an hour to work. So I hate it. HOWEVER....

With all that hate , there is nothing like the freedom to get in your car and go where ever you want. I don't have to be a time table. I don't have to worry about when the bus comes, and in my town NEVER since we don't have one. And if the Zombies come I know I can get away .

A lot of European cities as well as South American cities did build car infrastructure but then through policy changes developed their cities to be even more walkable. Amsterdam wasn't the care free paradise that people think it is over 20 years ago. Yeah they had a lot of infrastructure already purposed to make urban living easier but it's not something that can't be made to happen here. We just need the local politicians to have the good will to make these changes to our cities to make them much more livable without owning a car. The massive size of the US shouldn't mean that cities and regions can't make changes to improve infrastructure or public transit access.

Ordering a car everytime can get expensive, though I can see how if using a car is not an everyday affair that it'd be quite a bit cheaper than owning one.

Biking is very weather dependent. With a car, you have protection from the general weather and given your climate control works, protection from the cold/heat
