I couldnt ever grow it as a kid because my parents used to swear up and down the street that if a kid ever had hair longer than that, it was because their parents obviously didnt care enough about them to take them to the barber every two weeks, and I should be grateful theyre willing to do that for me.

I think my hair was about this length maybe 2 thanksgivings ago, but when I visited home, my dad misled me and told me we needed to pick up some dirt and clay for a road we were going to make leading to their shed, and even hitched the trailer to our jeep, and then brought me to a barber in the middle of nowhere so I had no choice but to get it cut down.

I dont even know how my hair is even going to look in 2 weeks! Its been about a month now.

My parents were the same way - haircuts every 2 weeks. I always had a hat on because my head would be freezing

Growing my hear out in my early twenties made me very happy, but also annoyed that I had to learn a lot of things about maintaining hair, that I could have learned as a kid, if my parents had just allowed me to grow my hair out already back then.

Meanwhile, here I am with my hair down to a couple inches shy of my butt. When I was in middle school I had to spend months convincing my parents to let me cut it real short, to like an inch in length, because I wanted it short until college. Then I wanted it long.

Thats a big thing for me too. I dont even know how Im going to style it. And how can I? I wasnt allowed to grow it long enough to even need to style or comb in any meaningful way.

Mine's about a foot long at this point. I'd get it cut but I think it looks good.

Weird. Grow it out a bit, yes. Don't go full rebellious mullet - that won't help anything - but you deserve to see what a "normal" hairstyle looks like on you.

The good thing about growing hair is that if you don't think it works for you you can just have your regular haircut. Nothing wrong with trying it out. I used to hair long hair myself but now it's short. I'm currently trying to grow my beard out so I'll see how that works out unless I get annoyed with waiting and just trim it.

I broke up with my last girlfriend after she decided to shave her head. I get that some people find it freeing, but I straight up told her it's either me or the chemo.

This! My head would always been cold. I was always wearing like beanies and stuff I like my hair. And my mom said it was pretty and curly like my dads. But she always liked it when I got it cut cause it looked more Professional, I guess These days, I have to get it cut for work. But I can go longer without one Especially if I take leave

It can be hard for some people to grow it back. My best friend use to have long hair, and cut it kind of short once. And shes been trying to get it longer. The problem is you still have to get a certain amount cut constantly to avoid split ends So, shes still trying

My dad the same way, I always wanted long hair as a teen but he always talked bad about people with long hair while at the same time reminiscing about his long hair he had at that age. Girls at school said I would look pretty/cute with long hair too and it was extremely socially distressing for me not being able to do that.

I've still never had it all that long so I guess it doesn't bother me much.

Not really, you just have to take proper care of it.

Is she just growing it out (and taking care of it) or also still doing things like perms and colouring?

When she was originally trying, she was stop dyeing her hair And I dont think she ever got perms. She was taking care of her hair, abd even looking specific stuff up. It was mostly just taking care of it, and getting it cut every once in a while That was for a few years But it was still taking forever And while there are other ways to help avoid split ends, cutting it usually the most surefire way. And I can understand why it would be worrisome for some people

I might have just tripped over the word "constantly", growing out one's hair does take a long time.

At some point it would be better to cut off the dead/split ends yes, but that is something best discussed with someone actually knowledgeable of hair and not just tricking you into being a regular customer, as that timing probably depends on the specifics of each individual's hair.

Yeah. She knows about hair. When I said constantly going, I just meant never stopping fully. But she definitely started waiting much longer to go. Basically, long enough for the hair to grow some, but not too long to where the split ends would get bad Like you said, its still depends on the individual, so most stuff she had to find a happy balance of that took a little time to figure out

I think my beard hair is longer than that right now. And I usually shave it somewhat regularly.

My sister-in-law used to tell my niece that she wasn't allow to have haircuts because she preferred her hair long. It was like halfway down her back and she kind of hated it because of having to constantly brush it and condition it and clip split ends to keep it from becoming a tangled bird's nest. I used to threaten/offer to cut it all off whenever she came to visit, because I'm a rebellious iconoclast and I'd happily take the heat from her mom if it meant she could get a hairstyle she actually wanted. But she never quite had the courage to take me up on it.

Meanwhile, when -I- was in high school, I shaved my head bald except for a foot-long pony tail out the back (basically like this: https://youtu.be/FNrQOUtXYOo?t=45 - though I had mine before he did). And then a few teachers were like, "What do your parents think of you having hair like that?", and then I answered (honestly) "My dad is the one who cut it for me!"
