So... What made those states better?

I can only speak for NC but here are some reasons:

- Politically not far left nor right
- Relatively mild weather; summers are hot and humid but not as bad as states farther south and winters are cold but not as bad as states farther north
- Multiple well-known colleges in the Peidmont help foster a good environment for entertainment and job opportunities
- Diverse geography with mountainous areas in the west and beaches in the east
- Reasonable cost of living in most areas

Texas would be tied with California for the best state in the country if it wasn't for the Republican Party.

Both in my opinion have the 2 worst governors. But if I had to pick, maybe I'd live in Texas. Abbot seems be a horrible human, but I think he might be slightly less slimy than DeSantis. Or at least less ambitious about becoming a dictator

I mean, republicans have barely held onto power the last few elections. If not for some super blatant gerrymandering, I think democrats would have won in 2020 overall.

Before Abbott and these recent Texas legislative sessions, I'd have full on moved to Texas (El Paso specifically, but still Texas).

Still, I'd rather be poor and destitute, stricken to wander the streets in a starved, crazed state for eternity than willingly live in Florida
