I'm fighting the Shadow Queen in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. The only healing item I have is an Ultra Shroom. Do I need to get some Life Shrooms?

The worst part of that game is losing to her and having to sit through half-hour of cutscenes to try again. Good luck

OK, but should I get some Life Shrooms? I kind of don't want to go all the way back to Rogueport.

You will probably need some superguards to survive long enough with only one healing item unless you have a heavy partner attack setup (which means Mario can just spend turns spamming Sweet Treat), or you're at the sweet spot with Mario's HP where you have enough for Sweet Feast to be efficient healing (about 30 HP) but also have enough BP/FP to get through the fight before you run out of SP for healing. Power Lift is also generally worth using since 5 points of stats is busted AF, though it is slightly less efficient than normal here because she has a defense-piercing attack or two IIRC.

It has been a long time since I played TTYD without abusing something like Mega Rush P or something that made her phases last about 3-5 turns, so I'm possibly off the mark with how much sustain you'll need with a more normal damage output. Even a mediocre setup should be able to hit 6-8 base power jumps with Power Lift, though.

Would it be worth it to go back to Rogueport and get Life Shrooms?

You would almost certainly be able to win the fight with either Life Shrooms or more healing. If you have good damage output, you can also just use Boo's Sheets (this is what speedruns do).

It's an awkward conundrum because walking back to town is painfully slow (there are minimal shortcuts in the palace), but the fight also starts with a ton of long cutscenes and has even more cutscenes in the middle of the fight, none of which you can skip of course, all of which repeat on every attempt.

What's interesting about ttyd is that you can actually reach level 99, but its tedious as all hell. High 60s is my limit

You don't need Life Shrooms but they do help. Superguarding is not necessary. I've never needed superguards to beat her.

With only one healing item on your first playthrough, though? That's pretty iffy. She's generally putting out around six to ten damage a turn if I remember right.

Maybe I'm underestimating the amount that I was just bad back then, though.

Yeah TC needs to go back to buy more items. I'd carry at least 6 or so ultra shrooms.

Go buy some heals. People are not overstating the pain of losing to her. You could probably go to Rogueport twice in the amount of time that cutscene would take.

there's one specific strategy you can do that trivializes every fight; though for safety reasons it does require a lot of life shrooms

There's a lot of strategies you can do that trivialize every fight. You get access to Mega Rush P and Quick Change in chapter 1, for example (though you probably can't really start using it until chapter 2 because your first level should be FP), and then you can just have a 1 HP partner with +5 attack that you swap out after they attack every turn. Then you can steal another 1-2 Mega Rush Ps after chapter 5. (Or technically even before chapter 5, but you have to get to exactly one battle in Glitz Pit).

"But getting partners to 1 HP is tricky." Nah, you just buy Point Swaps from the Glitzville shop and spam FP moves until you have 1 FP, then use one to fully restore your FP while boosting a partner's attack to the moon. Just be mindful that leveling up with that partner active heals them, and swap them out after combat to avoid getting heart drops with them.

People are most familiar with Mario's low health builds, but they take a lot longer to come online and have more possibilities for failure.
