How do you feel about immigrants who come to the US but don't want to completely assimilated into American's life and cultures? For example I know of Nigerian, Cambodian, Ethiopian, Laotians, Mexicans etc.. immigrants who prefer to stick to and preserve their own ethnic cultural roots, instead of being a "full blown" American. Of course, they still learn to speak English (only out of necessity) and are all law-abiding citizens, they just don't want to 100% assimilated into American cultures and would rather take pride in their ethnic roots.

What does it even mean to be "fully assimilated".

Like what in specific.

Being a full blown American means what exactly?

America doesnt have one identity, and never has. What makes this country beautiful is the diversity even from the beginning. Immigrants built this country, and will continue to help shape it for years and years.

I guess by that what I meant is: flying the US flags, celebrating Thanksgiving, celebrating July 4th, enjoying American footballs etc.... The aforementioned immigrants I mentioned don't care about any of that and would rather celebrating their ethnic culture/heritage and prefer their own ethnic foods instead. Again it's like I mentioned, they still are all decent law-abiding citizens, they just don't at all care about "American culture". I noticed immigrants (especially non-white immigrants) are sometimes feel the pressure to have to assimilated. But what if they don't want to? Do you guys feel there's an issue? I noticed there are bigots who considered them "aliens" and not "true Americans"

people generally, even "true Americans", stick closer to their "own groups".

like, it's likelier for someone to be more acquainted with others who are the same ethnicity, share the same culture, etc., even if they're open-minded and not prejudiced.

a Laotian immigrant, for example, might be willing to expand their horizons, but feels comfort being around other people from their homeland who share the same traditions, home language, and experiences.

it's not refusing to assimilate, it's just human nature.

Why the fuck is this an issue then?

US is composed of many ethnic groups who actively practice their own culture. All if not most are functional members of society. Do you want them to hog down hot dogs, watch baseball and get fat as an honorary badge of being a "real American"?

Seems pretty obvious that the answer is "no, I don't care if immigrants do not 100% embrace the American way of life".

Considering a majority of people born in America don't 100% embrace the American way of life.

I cant be judgemental. Im a foreigner living in a country where I pick and choose the parts of the culture that Ill stick with.

This is how immigration works in pretty much every nation and culture. First-generation immigrants naturally want to preserve what they grew up with, and while they will generally make good faith efforts to respect the nation they moved to, changes they have to make to do this, like speaking a different language, eating different foods, or avoiding actions that are natural and culturally appropriate where they came from, can be actively stressful. Second-generation immigrants generally learn their family's traditions and learn both their nation's primary language and the language their parents are most comfortable with, but also grow up with friends and schooling in their new nation and tend to be overall more acclimated to these. Third generation immigrants are generally "fully assimilated', but may still try to preserve and respect some of the traditions of their grandparents' home.

It's also just a matter of time. Given 20 or 30 years, people tend to lose that resistance to changing their identity and will use names and concepts that are more like the nation they currently live in over ones from their origin nation.

I am generalizing, but overall "assimilation" (mainly choice of primary language and adopting cultural norms) is overwhelmingly common by the third generation.
