Ive read in a few places that one of the original Metroid developers said that Samus was a transwoman, but Im not sure just how apocryphal that account is. --- The world is a worse place now than it ever was before, but far better than it ever will be again. They/Them ... Copied to Clipboard!

She's not. Articles took a developer interview out of context where they said she started as male and became female, but they were referring to the development, not the lore. Old advertising and a board game where Samus is depicted as male were cited too, but those were because they didn't know the source material. --- ...I think I'm done here... ... Copied to Clipboard!

The only character who could be considered trans in any sense is Zelda and even that is suspect because 1)while the manga makes it explicit that Zelda gained a master sword herself it is ambiguous in the N64 version. 2) it could be easily successfully argued that it is not a representation of trans because Zelda was in disguise out of necessity/survival and not as an outward expression of the inward experience ... I'm glad Samus is female. She's a cool character and it makes her stand out from all the other protagonists of that time period. I always though it was cringe how beating the game with a good rank rewarded you with pictures of her in a bikini though, even when I was a horny kid. It's like oh we established what a badass Samus is in this game, but let's objectify her for no reason ... Copied to Clipboard!

DeepFriedSquid posted... I'm glad Samus is female. She's a cool character and it makes her stand out from all the other protagonists of that time period. Carry Fisher has the best quote "The father who flipped out about it [Lei's metal bikini in Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)], "What am I going to tell my kid about why she's in that outfit?" Tell them that a giant slug captured me and forced me to wear that stupid outfit, and then I killed him because I didn't like it." Clearly you are the Metroid in Metroid 1. That's why her mission in Metroid II is to destroy all Metroids. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I've read quite a few articles regarding the issue, and most seem to put a ton of weight behind a lot of the coy, if not deliberately misleading, language that Nintendo/marketing used around her gender in the original game. I personally think it feels rather obvious given the historical context that this language was used as it was to preserve the twist of the original game, rather than a deliberate effort by Nintendo to portray her as trans. This is largely backed by the fact all this vague language about her gender basically stopped with subsequent releases when there was no longer a need to preserve the twist. That said, who cares if people want to think of Samus as a trans woman? It literally hurts no one. --- *Gheb is my other account* ... Copied to Clipboard!
