Cool move. Probably one of the first massive moves made by a group of academics against these journals.

What does this mean

It means the company can't print anything new and if they hire new editors their credentials will be suspect compared to the already established and proven team of editors that resigned.

What does this mean

Journals, at least many to most, charge a fee to publish an article. So you send it out to them, the editor decides if it's a good enough fit to potentially be published there, sends it out for review. After reviewers are satisfied, then the article gets accepted, assuming you pay their fee. NeuroImage, a journal for brain imaging, just recently increased this fee and all the editors for the journal stepped down in protest, starting a new journal.

Think about how grossly overpriced your college textbooks were. Now, imagine having to pay ten times that to essentially write the next textbook.

Good. Gatekeeping prescious and potentially life saving info cause greed.

I wouldn't classify NeuroImage as a medical journal, and no.

I vaguely remember paying 1600-1800, but not completely sure.

Every time this topic comes up, I have to again stupidly ask what purpose the journal system serves anymore, in the age of the internet.

There was some hope of changing the system during COVID when researchers around the world were coordinating their research together.

Yeah. The large APCs for prestigious journals means that publishing in these journals is only accessible to labs with good grant money. Unsurprisingly, publishing in these prestigious journals is what is necessary for securing good grant funding. And the cycle continues...
