This would be neat but also suck knowing everyone would eventually die again but I guess knowing it's not forever would lessen the impact of it.

I can choose anything?

I choose that when you die, you've completed the tutorial for basic life, which opens up a menu for you to choose from two options. You can either create your own universe (with or without a long list of presets you can toggle on or off) and give yourself a place in it, or choose from a library of preexisting fictional universes that contains every universe everyone playing the tutorial ever dreamt up, and choose whether to occupy the position of an established character or a completely new one you can design like in a very detailed video game's character creation screen.

Everyone gets their separate instanced space to do what ever they want in. You could have pet tigers that act like calm kittens for pets. You could have machamp as your spotter while you workout in your own home gym. Only limit is your imagination. You can invite others in to live with so you can be with your family or you could play in this world of yours alone.

Then there would be communal spaces where you meet with you friends and family. All food, drinks and entertainment is free of course.

There's also an instance where it completely mirrors the current earth. If a new ride is built at your favourite theme park, you can go to try it out. If a new movie comes out, you can go to the cinema to watch it. New games, music etc.

Gosh. I'd love to understand how people can be apparently so okay with nothing after death, and actually wish for it? Don't you like... existing? I can understand if someone is severely depressed or horrifically injured in some way, and life is more pain than anything else. But besides those extremes, existing is fucking rad! Think about it. What are the fuckin' odds? That YOU! YOU! Get to experience life. I don't believe in gods or anything but I really do see life as a gift. We get one tiny little blip, and it breaks my heart it'll be over so soon.

Existing is great...but how long do you want to exist? 100 years? 500? 5000? 200,000? 20 million? 20 billion? Imagine existing for 20 billion years. I don't know if I would want that.

Are you sure about that? As humans, we only get around 80 years. That's not a lot, so it makes us yearn for more obviously. If I could choose, I would give myself at least 10,000 years to experience all there is to experience. That's more than enough time to experience stuff away from Earth too.

But eventually you will get bored since you've seen and experienced it all. You would want to lay down and sleep...for good. No one would choose an afterlife that existed for millions let alone billions of years. After all that time...you'd go crazy.

I don't want life after death. I want life. Make me immortal if you want. I'll take it. But the idea that I have to leave everything behind to go somewhere else and start all over is just not appealing.

And then the third is to die after counting backwards from 100 to 0 in your head.

Because you dont want to end up in a situation where you are like maybe 10s or 100s of thousands of years into the future, no one else left alive and maybe the planet gets swallowed by another star from a colliding galaxy. You dont want to drift through space forever, in nothingness.

An afterlife is so yesterday's philosophical thought. I'd rather have reincarnation. That's more interesting. You are born, you live, you die. Your spirit moves on to the next newborn and you start over fresh trying again to live the best you can. Kind of like that roguelike idea someone said in the topic. That's what makes life worth living. That's also why an afterlife probably doesn't exist. Existing is only worth existing if there's some ying and yang - ie, happiness to sadness. If it's just constant happiness, would it be happiness? Look for example at rich and famous people. They have it all. Money, fame, sex appeal, success...yet they're not always happy. I feel like it would be the same if there was a heaven.

Yeah but that's assuming we keep the same brain for all of eternity. Even if we did we could easily modify our brains to not feel boredom and not go crazy. I think if we lived forever, I would not want my current body forever but for my soul to go on and I'd be able to experience all sorts of crazy things like being an alien in some 5d dimension or a dragon in a reality where they exist. There's just so many possibilities.

Yeah it all sounds amazing. But for how long? After thousands (maybe 100s of 1000s), you'd have done it all. I feel like because we're only here for such a short amount of time, we don't realize how long eternity is. One billion years is an insane amount of time. But then think about one trillion or one quadrillion years. Even if you don't get bored, you'll be doing the same things for billions of years. Then quadrillion years. That sounds crazy in of itself if you ask me.

I'd be good with eternity if it was with the people I love (even if they're just created from my own memories).

A nice home in the woods, by a crystal clear lake and mountains in the background. No bugs around. All the music I've ever listened to and surrounded by loved ones? Paradise.

And maybe even an option to isekai myself into another world, live another life (as me), when I get bored.
