I bought the box set of the manga recently. I've watched the series a few times. Original and Brotherhood. I've read the manga before too. It always feels different every time I get into it.

I read half of the manga as a kid but I ended up stopping and forgetting it, but last year I sat down and read through the whole thing and loved it. Its such a fun, well thought out story with great characters and a satisfying ending.

Really tragic that Brotherhood watchers won't get it at all.

Brotherhood skims through all of the stuff in the original. Instead of a full episode + some build up the whole thing gets a bit less than half of an episode. Like, you barely even find out Nina's name prior to the events, which basically ruins any chance of caring.

Not really. Most people lack empathy for characters introduced shortly before having bad things happen to them. We tend to write it off as "bad writing." Brotherhood just has a leg up due to nostalgia letting people skip over scenes mentally.

I view it in the same line as people getting emotional over Hope's Mom dying at the beginning of XIII: essentially no one is actually going to view it as an emotional thing. The difference is that XIII has the rest of the story to attempt to retroactively make you care while Brotherhood just tells you to go read the manga/watch the original.

I guess we would need a poll to view it in objective terms, yes.

All I know is that, having seen both series multiple times, I thought the single-episode Ninalexander story was fine. And it made a friend who had never seen either series bawl her eyes out. Of course, that's just an anecdote.

It covers the exact same amount the manga covered. The whole Tucker ordeal is one chapter in the manga from meeting to when Scar kills him. 03 only expanded on it because they needed to waste time to not catch up to the manga.

haven't seen the Nina episodes of Brotherhood because the 2003 FMA and Brotherhood starts are pretty similar up at the Greed fight

The the 2003 Anime does it's own thing and kinda goes downhill Imo but Brotherhood adapts the rest of the Manga

I like Brotherhood more because I love character like Lin, LanFan, Olivia, and Barry the Chopper,
Also Manga Pride>>>>2003 Anime Wrath confusingly 2003 anime Pride is Furher Bradley but in the Manga/Brotherhood he is Wrath. Manga/Brotherhood Pride is Bradley's adopted son and he is fucking terrifying

i'm as big a FMA 2003 apologist as there is but that isn't really the case when it comes to this. is 03 better for this particular moment? yeah i'd say so. but brotherhood still gets it across perfectly fine

the real character who gets shafted in brotherhood is Hughes. in 03 you see so much more of him than even the manga (having Hughes debut in the hostage train segment is imo way way better) and it establishes much more firmly how integral Hughes is to Mustang's ambitions, which makes what happens to him that much more effective

i thought it was pretty cool
