They were trying to look as far back as possible (since when you look across space distances, you aren't seeing it now, but as it was in the past) . They found galaxies that would have existed earlier in universal history than they believed was possible. And now they are wondering if the universe is much older than we thought. I've seen some people on YouTube wonder if the universe always existed and there was no big bang. But I don't know how realistic that is But who knows.
