We've been working together for a little while, and gotten to know each other a bit and I think he's a pretty good guy. He invited me to a event that his church is having on sunday.
Problem is, I'm not religious. At all. Quite the opposite actually. I think religion is a very harmful and toxic thing at this day and age and it's not something I care to support.
I don't really want to disappoint him, but church is not the place where I belong. I've told him I'm not religious, though he doesn't know how much my disdain for it goes.
Thoughts, CE?

depends on the religion.

if it's mormon or jehovah's witness they're trying to convert you
scientology they also convert.

not sure about the others.

Will there be free food and drinks being served to the attendees? Might wanna go just for that, given how good church folks home cooking tends to be, just sayin.

I mean its not like youre gonna go to some gathering where they pass out explosives to firebomb abortion clinics. Chances are its just ordinary Easter service which is neither harmful or toxic. Your experience will be as follows: You go there, get some very good snacks and coffee/juice, then sit through an hour or two of boring sermons and singing. Thats all.

If you dont want it, just say so. Or make up an excuse like you have a prior commitment, although thats something that wouldve worked a lot better at the time he asked.

Depends on the type of event. For example, I occasionally go to a board game event hosted by a church group. For the 5-hour event theres a brief 10-minute sermon in the middle, which I dont particularly mind. Id probably do the same thing for a food event. It helps that its not interactive so I dont have to actively participate.

If the church part was the main point I definitely wouldnt go to the event. Same if I knew the people there were gonna be obnoxious about it, but I guess you cant really know that for sure unless you check it out.

Say no thank you with a grateful acknowledgment to his consideration and thats it.

Youll risk alienating him if you go deeper, but thats your choice.

I turned down an invite this week and said " Thanks but I don't want to risk dealing with certain people". She laughed and said "nah I get it". Comes a point where it's easier to just be honest and say no thanks.

Just don't drink the Kool Aid/Flavor Aid.

In all seriousness TC, skip it.

Nothing can be more expensive than free food. Imagine the shit you'd have to sit through.

Why does everyone on ce think every church on earth is just a place that espouses the same exact right-wing ideals?

Most churches don't. Most churches I've been to go as far as to purposely exclude from talking about politics at all. A lot of them even actively condemn the hateful things that the right in this country are doing.

Really comes down to you, and how much you can tolerate.

Is he the religious pushy type? The type that can't help but to shove his religion in your face?

Is it like some church party event? Or is it like some Sunday Church thing?

It's Easter Sunday, which is kind of a big fucking deal. If you're not religious, you should not even consider accepting an invitation to go to someone's church for Easter Sunday lol

Nah if anything it's one of the big two days that get the most barely religious people in the doors. Churches are more than happy to use the opportunity to lure new people into giving them money.

They aren't right wing institutions. There are plenty of churches that are quite liberal

Honestly people who think like this are part of the reason the right wing garbage suckered in so many actual Christians.

"I'm not really religious but thank you for inviting me anyway. If I don't make it maybe we could get together another time!" is the best way to resolve and shut that topic down on good terms.

Of course if they feel offended by even that, hey that's on them.

Why do people think right wing institutions espouse right wing talking points? Huh, it is a mystery.

I know you think you're being clever but do you even realize what you responded to?

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

No, you're not the reason why some people are bigots. It's more of a systematic process from what I've seen. Quite a sad one.

However, I'm sure that some people would see what you're posting and see you as a bigot.

Just say that you appreciate the offer, but you won't be attending. One of my best friends is a born again Christian. He invites me to church events all the time, but no hard feelings if I decline (which I do 99% of the time).

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

It's weird that you think that all churches are right wing. There are multiple denominations that have their own views.

bruh your first post in this topic was calling church food bland and tasteless.

then this:

https://i.imgur.com/XmRR4Qk.png

was your second. you immediately jumped on the "churches are right-wing" train and now are trying to backpedal and deflect.

I'm no fan of churches but immediately jumping to a conclusion like that is kinda dumb.
