My job wants me to do this approx one week every other month

Trade off: I only need to come into the office 1 day/week the other 3 weeks

This position is on call some weekends so I get an extra approx 4k/year to be available for emergencies which never happen

I can transfer (again) but Ill lose the on call extra money

Did it for 6 years. Bedtime comes a bit early but you have all afternoon free.

Go to bed early.

I know that sounds easy but it just takes some time to get your body used to the new schedule.

If its once every two months, your body wont even realize the difference.

Itll be like getting up extra early to catch a 6am flight. By the time your body realizes what happened, youll probably be 3/4ths through your shift

I already do and prefer it over 8-5. Its nice to avoid the usual traffic hours, go to lunch before places get busy, be able to do outdoor activities in the afternoon, or can schedule appointments without having to take time off.

It's a great schedule. You get the jump on everyone and everything all day long.

Pass. I worked 5am to 1:30pm back when I was 18 and I hated that. Granted that was 8 hours of lifting 10-30 pounds over and over. Having the afternoon free was nice, but I had to be in bed ridiculously early to get enough sleep in to be functional the next day. I was up by 4:00, so I had to be in bed by 8pm to get 8 hours of sleep.

How are you functioning on only 5 hours of sleep every night? I do that for 1 or 2 nights and I'm exhausted for the rest of the week.

I was a night person the last 10 years and hated waking up early. Always slept in till noon and later. Eventually holidays shifted my work schedule and I've been 6 to 2:30 or 7 to 3:30 ever since. Once you wake up early enough your body will get into a rhythm. I'm usually in bed by 11:30 to 12:30 and get like 5 and a half to 6 hours of sleep. Power nap when I'm home. It's not too bad.

Its just me I think. I used to stay sleeping 7 hours and feeling like shit, nodding off at work midday. Ever since I went back to this schedule though Ive been feeling so much better, I dont drink coffee for shit either.

Im sure things will likely change in my 30s though

yeah once your body gets used to like 5 hours of sleep, getting even an extra 30 min will throw your whole day off haha!
