That was a weird controversy.

Oh yeah, I had almost forgotten about that movie. I never watched it, so I don't even know if the hate was warranted.

The media illiterate anti-sjw crowd really went bonkers over that one

I put one in my daughter lunch today.

The movie was not as bad as people made it out to be imo. There were some very uncomfortable parts like the kids twerking but it didn't go too overboard with it like actual sex or nudity.

Very weird movie on its own, but the people who tried so hard to defend it really made it worse.

It was both called for concern but at the same time it was also taken way over the line as well. There were people thinking and saying that the movie was trying to say that sexualizing little girls was okay when in fact the movie goes out of its way to say the opposite. But at the same time, to even say that sexualizing little girls is wrong... they still sexualized them. Granted it's not for a whole movie and it was only for a dance act at the end of the film, but still it doesn't take away the fact that they were still sexualized.

I saw it once to see what all the fuss was about. Here is the condensed version of the plot as best as I can piece together from memory.

Girl has a strict religious upbringing that is stifling her. She sees other girls being more open and free, and is intrigued. She learns that the girls compete as a dance group and dance very lewdly. She eventually joins the group and starts emulating them (makeup, clothes, attitude) and feeling happier. Then, the pendulum slides too far to the other side. She assaults one of the other girls to force her way back on the team for a performance, but then she has an epiphany that she doesn't like the hyper sexualized lifestyle she's leaning into, so she goes home, changes into jeans and a shirt (symbolizing her landing in the middle on the struggle between "hyper religious" and "hyper sexualized") and goes out to play with a group of kids.

The dancing in the film made me so uncomfortable I fast forwarded through it. I get what the director was going for, but damn, it still made my skin crawl.

Yeah this topic made me look up old articles about the controversy, because I couldn't remember a lot of it. Between the article I found and your post, it definitely sounds like the backlash was overblown.

They said the film was specifically trying to make a point about how much kids can be influenced by social media. And how little girls often see women become successful by being overly sexualized in social media and they imitate it without fully understanding.

I definitely don't want to see little girls twerking though. My goddaughter is that age, so that would really creep me out. But I know that kind of thing really does happen. For better or worse, kids soak up what they see and hear.

The movie is one of those artsy fartsy coming of age films that tries to go the Scorsese route of "show don't tell". The Controversy was really overblown out of proportion, but I don't blame people for being uncomfortable for the film. It didn't help that Netflix had that godawful poster and movie description at the beginning.

The reason it was blown out of proportion was because right wingers were in the early stages of going nuts about groomers. At that point it was still mostly Qanon people but it was beginning to drift into the mainstream so you had people claiming netflix was uploading child porn to normalize sex trafficking

Other than the funny fact that the states that tried to pursue charges on the film/Netflix (which obviously didn't lead anywhere) were all child abuse central states like Texas, I didn't look into this mess at all.

Then that's enough to not accept any other angle the movie is going for. Your audience doesn't need to know how uncomfortable it is to look up close to preteens twerking. Everyone not already a pedophile knows that. That's just you being fuckin gross and exploiting these actors that can't even legally sign off on themselves.

There aren't any context clues that I was directing that towards him >_>. I immediately started targeting the makers of the movie when using "You". So, there shouldn't be confusion for who that's aimed at. How would I accuse Gob of exploiting the actors lol. That makes no sense

Tbf Netflix created the controversy by using a fucked up poster.

Not gonna put up the poster that Netflix used cause I don't feel like beating a ghost horse today but had Netflix just used that poster there would have never been a controversy.

It's not an exaggeration that they zoom in but he may have left you with an impression that the zoom shots were longer than they actually are.

Think like those movies where someone walks into a room and everyone inside had been butchered and as the camera is panning over the room it does zoom ins on the faces of the dead. It was kind of like that.

The intent was similar as well--to gross you out. So if you feel uncomfortable watching it then it means it worked.
