Instead of a regular new game, I'm gonna do NG+ on bitter difficulty.
I remember that being the game at its best.
I haven't watched most of the cutscenes in this in ages.
They got the MGS colonel narrating the opening.

The cutscenes are still great but the gameplay gets repetitive towards the end and that final boss is so dumb >_>

it's really bad. somehow worse than the first game and not even as stylish. it doesn't really get memorable until the last few fights. there was very little to enjoy with gameplay and story.

I will not hear a bad world against the legend himself, the final boss of this game.
He is the coolest character in the game.

My Travis from however long ago I made this has dark green pants, a white shirt with a blue star on it, purple shades and no jacket.

He's really laying into Skelter Helter.

Quarter of the fight down, another cutscene.
Run up, roll back, bait out the combo, lunge attack, two hits, repeat and hope he doesn't lunge/shoot.
BIG RED is as fun as ever.

Haha the ecstasy bar is so OP.
I was kinda on the backfoot when he started doing slash, slash, back off while shooting because he wasn't opening himself up outside of the occasional lunge.

Edit: Oh I gotta try some darkstep abuse, that technique totally destroyed the first game even on bitter. I'm pretty sure I remember it being way stronger in that one than here. This game it's all about building meter using colossal crimson, then either stunlocking or getting weapon clashes from halfway across a room.

I love how Skelter Helter starts off as some random mook but then it's only after he's been killed he fires off all his weird quirks then finishes himself.

UAA ranking list. I'm letting the song ride for a minute. Wonder how many people hear much of this thing.
(Makes sure to tap A so Travis' walking/jump animations randomly accelerate/decelerate)

They don't want you to raise money to play levels like in the first one though. You can just line them up and run the gauntlet this time.
The minigames are optional self-flagellation.

Jasper Batt Jr huh, this fellow sounds badass and legendary.
Like the kind of guy who puts the win in window.
Edit: Oh my goodness, a pizza that heals. I wonder whose factory this came from. I'm thinking there's going to be a hard hitting revelation about this down the line.

Nathan Copeland gives me stronger TWEWY vibes than I remember him giving me.
That or Demoman with a bunch of pricey, garish weapons and cosmetics.

(Chandelier drops)
Nathan: Heheh yesssss, then when they don't immediately get to the far side of the room after it falls the first time, I'll also make the floors move and have turrets shoot that area.

The Resident Evil 4 world has a TF2 Pyro for a boss instead of a chainsaw guy.
There are chainsaw guys in this level but Travis just walks through them.

I like how Travis is scared of Matt Helms then the second he's revealed, Travis just switches to aw yeah I could kick that guy's ass easy mode.

I love how you can hit enemies in two completely different directions. Hit an enemy, in front of you, hold back when the game slows down to give the hit some impact and he'll just snap 180 degrees and hit the guy behind you.
Got a lot of mileage out of the standing on a record player technique in the last level.

I remembered Cloe Walsh being pitifully easy, but I didn't remember Travis literally impaling her torso with a laser sword in the pre-fight cutscene. I guess that's an excuse.

Edit: Oh right you don't have to do a level before Letz Shake they just let you go right in. That's awesome.

I got this.

I'm a little confused.
Do you have something against the current boss, man who lives in bank and is voiced by Colonel Campbell? I'm gonna one-try him just for you, fear not.
Edit: The leader of the bank clan has fallen.

>50 bossfights were advertised but it was a lie
>fighting multiple bosses at the same time was advertised but even in those fights bosses took turns fighting you
>game lets you play as multiple characters, but the game wasn't suited for their playstyles (platforming was clumsy, you're able to cheese through levels/bossfights with their abilities)

enemies were bullet sponges, bossfights felt uninspired, nothing felt polished. later levels had too many mobs. final fight was a joke. :)

So how does this air combo work? Is the last hit an insta-kill against certain enemies? Or does it just do a lot more damage?
It's also looking like I'm getting some invuln frames or a grace period when I land after a full air combo.
The thing where you press B mid air combo to backflip off air doesn't seem that practical but it looks cool.
The jumping lunge I haven't really found a purpose for yet, gonna see if it works as a guard break or if it's a notably better stagger than anything else.

Edit: Okay one-comboed one of the heavy enemies, that last hit does a lot of damage.

Fair enough, I guess? Didn't look at the advertisements for this game.

Shinobu really does suck to play as yeah. Henry was fun.

>Travis falls for the same trick from Sylvia again
She could get him to the one he wants to kill, and he's a complete horndog as established, nothing wrong there.

enemies were bullet sponges,
Eh...? You have plenty of tools to pump out damage, parry for instant power attacks, catch multiple enemies in the same kill move, knock them down and execute them, etc. Feels like a skill issue tbh, obviously they take longer to kill if you just use basic combos.

bossfights felt uninspired, nothing felt polished.
I just can't agree with this at all, at least for the most part. Again, Shinobu's parts are agony, the platforming is super janky and Gunman sucks, but aside from that I never felt the gameplay was lacking polish, and the bosses are great.

later levels had too many mobs.
I can buy that. Especially the second to last level which doesn't even have music in a large chunk of it.

final fight was a joke. :)
Batt's a joke character compared to Henry in the first game, absolutely, but the fight itself is anything but a joke until you git gud. Far more difficult than anything in 1 at least lol.

3 had its moment, but as a whole it really didn't hold up. 1 and 2 were insane, but I really didn't care for how 3 was just on Family Guy's level of randomness.

New Destroyman down.
Ryuji down.
Mimmy down.
The outside of the supermarket down.

More games should give me three boss fights in a row.
I remember how to deal with New Destroyman. Take out the ground guy underneath one of the platforms, let the flying guy come to him.

I know an old trick for Ryuji's first phase too. Just drive near the edge, let him start his charge move, when his icon on the minimap stops spinning, he's committed to the move, drive forward and he drives out of the way.
I love the second phase of that fight too, the giant dragon coming for your battery while Ryuji comes for your health. I got the finishing blow on him while the dragon was right near him so the slow mo after I landed it looked crazy.

Playing as Henry's cool in itself. I like that the invincible homing projectile move is always an option so you might as well screw around and go for some cool stuff because you have such an OP option on hand for when you want it to be over.

Edit: (Frantically rummages through decade old memories looking for Philistine lyrics.)

I always really liked the vibe I get from the last few levels.
For a while there's no daytime, it's all dusk, dawn or night. Margaret, Vladimir and Alice's levels are all combat with only two very different bike sections breaking up the rapid fire fights too.
There's something really comfy about it.

The song that starts playing halfway through Alice's level goes really well with it. The level's one of those weird akashic point dimensions so maybe the sky is yellow for the sake of being weird but I like the idea of Margaret, Vladmir and Alice's levels all taking place in the same night, like Travis didn't want any downtime, it's the home stretch and he's overworking himself. It kinda fits with his outburst after he kills Alice too. It makes the last level feel like its own thing too, after all that, it's a new day and Travis with his outlook has to go finish digging the hole he started.

But none of that's real because he gets messages telling him about each next match and it's clearly day when he leaves his room to travel somewhere.
Oh well. I'm going to pretend.

Edit: I think it's kind of odd she wants Travis to remember her but she only gives one name. The ranking screen right after has her down as Alice Twilight, yet she only gave Travis the first one to remember.

And done.
This thing is still really fun to play. Can't really speak for a first time run through because this was NG+ bitter difficulty. It's not that hard but it's really satisfying to parry -> spin attack or invuln frame through everything. Peony is one of the most satisfying swords in any game I can think of.

-I fucking love this cast of characters. They're great. They're just quirky enough to be memorable and just unexplored enough for me to make up my own lore.
-My favorite is definitely Jasper Batt Jr. Jasper was a ray of light in 2010, a dark time when final bosses were all busy overhyping themselves and trying to look badass then being ridiculously easy during the actual battle. Jasper however, is just here to simultaneously have a pizza factory and be evil. I think that's funny.
-A lot of the fights have great songs too. Philistine is the obvious SSS tier. New Destroyman, Letz Shake and Jasper Batt Jr have the best ones barring Philistine. Matt/Ryuji, Alice and Henry's songs are pretty great too.

I can probably come up with some negatives.
-Well I can understand people not liking Shinobu's levels but I guess I was familiar enough that after a few enemies it all started coming back in droves. I was having fun.
-The gun enemies are pretty annoying. If there was a low point it probably involved them.
-It would have been nice if deathmatch mode let you pick freely between Travis, Shinobu and Henry.

Of all the games I've revisited recently, this one's been the most consistently fun.
