Hi. I am planning to get Minecraft for my child. I want it to be playable on both Windows and iPad.

Now I have a $20 Xbox gift card that's been sitting for a long time, and I hope I can use it somehow.

My questions are:

1) Do I have to purchase it twice, once for each platform, or can I just buy it once?

2) Can my $20 Xbox gift card be used for the purchase? If so, should I get it on the Microsoft Windows Store, or on Minecraft.net directly?

3) Which Minecraft edition should I ultimately get?

Thanks.

I've never played Minecraft because it looks boring AF. Hopefully somebody has an answer for you though.

Why did you even respond to this topic then?

Anyways, you'll have to buy it twice if you want it on iOS. You can buy it once and play it on PC and Xbox, but that's it.

I believe it doesn't matter if you buy it from the Windows store or the website anymore (though an Xbox gift card would need the Windows store presumably), since it all just uses the Store launcher now. You might also get both Bedrock and Java version now, too. You would want Bedrock if you want your kid to have access to their world on multiple platforms. Java is PC only, for the most part.

Thank you. Another question, please. If I get Bedrock for $30 on PC, and then the $7 or $8 mobile version on the iOS App Store, will progress on one platform be synchronized to their servers, or will it be saved only for that platform?

For example, the Pokemon CCG allows players to play on either Windows or Mobile platforms, and progress is saved for the same account. I'm sure nobody would want two separate accounts with separate progressions.
