I was not expecting that ending and it makes me super excited for the second season. But as it went, I got more and more into it, and now I can't wait for the next part. --- I write Naruto Fanfiction. I liked the original anime but I don't have super duper fond memories of it as I do with something like Cowboy Bebop or Outlaw Star, but this new rendition was done so damn well. It being set prior to the anime and more or less be an origin story was such a great idea. I was surprised when they ended up going to JuLai, cause I was like "isn't that the town that gets destroyed and cause Vash his mega bounty? It ignored the themes of the original while also spending a lot of its time going "Hey, you remember that bit from the original? Well now we said the line!" This is why I would compare it to something like VIIR (or Star Wars Episode VII...) where it's not literally all bad or anything but it is clear that there is more effort on nostalgia-bait than actually making a good product so anything but a basic interpretation of events is shelved. It sets up the stage, but it fails to really do anything but go "I bet you wanna watch the original now, dont'cha?" as far as content is concerned. Like I said I was never fully in on the original anime from 1998, I vaguely remember some episodes during the midnight Adult Swim animation time (same with Yu Yu Hakusho and...Blue Cell? I can't remember the name of the one with alien bugs and such). I thought going into this relatively blind helped since I know it eschews the feeling of an old timey western style. It is there every once in a while but this rendition felt pretty great for someone with only a vague knowledge of the original. By the end I was all in, I really thought those last few episodes were just awesome. Once episode 3 happens and shit hits the fan is when it gets it's stride.
