I just vote and write to my congressman if I have something to complain about. That's all we can do. Depends on what they actually mean. Its possible to be aware of whats going on, care about it, do what you can to help, but still not make it your life.

Like, there are people out there whose lives are legitimately based around politics and those are the people whose brains have been rotted inside and out and are completely miserable.

When the world is miserable, why should people be allowed to ignore it?

TC can fuck off. I have severe anxiety and depression and struggle just to get through every day. I have to take care of myself and reading in to politics just causes me more stress and negativity. I may have some privilege but that doesn't mean I'm immune from mental health issues. So eat shit TC.

I too have significant issues. And the world being out to get me doesn't help, but you can't ignore it.

I try to vote, raise my children with good values, support my local community through action, and participate in charitable organizations. I dont go online to get in arguments with people who are either in bad faith or wont change their mind. So yeah, I avoid politics.

No one has ever changed someone's political views by arguing about it online. People need to have their own experiences, base their viewpoints on that, and do whatever is in their power to move their city/state/country in the direction you think is best. Even if the only thing you can do is vote for whoever you think is best for the job, that's better than doing nothing.

This is what I personally mean when I say that I try to avoid talking about politics. It's not that I don't have my own views and beliefs, but that I know there's very little the average person can do to change another individual's viewpoint.

the thing is that the definition of "politics" is really nebulous, and people's views on what constitutes "politics" is extremely subjective. for the most part it's just... not really a useful term.

Online on a message board is one thing, but politics is one of two things, the other being religion, that I try not to discuss with anyone for any reason.
Main reason is those two subjects can turn the best of friends into the worst of enemies real quick. Second is I don't care about your religious or political beliefs, and I'm certain you don't care about mine.

Are LGBTQ people not people to you? In the increasing amount of the world where they are being victimized and oppressed, are they allowed to ignore politics? Every day of their life is made worse than it should be specifically because of politics. Unless you live by yourself on unclaimed land, every single day of your life is constantly affected by politics.

The other thing that makes people say "I try to avoid politics" is the pushback you'll get from people who think they're doing the right thing, but they're SO forceful about it, it turns people off.

Best example I can give is, my brother-in-law (wife's brother) is gay. As a sign of support, I'll go to as many parades, rallies, and other assorted fundraisers him and his husband are a part of.

I'll tell someone this, and tell them this is my way of helping their fight. And inevitably I'll get someone saying "That's great, but what are you doing about the overturning Roe V Wade? Or the migrant problem at the border?" And I'm like WTF?

To some, just doing something is enough, you have to do EVERYTHING or else you're doing nothing.

Like, you have to be 100% for a ban on guns, and not just pushing for common sense gun laws.

And it gets to the point where it's easier to just say you're not into politics, as opposed to revealing your views and get chastised for you not being "all in" or, even worse, running into someone with opposing views.

I say that because there are a lot of right wing nut jobs that I interact with, and I don't want to talk with them about politics at all.

I'm stressed enough, thanks. I'll be more concerned about politics after I stop my own brain from self-destruction.

I absolutely would not want to be friends with anyone whose religious or political beliefs are incompatible with my very being. That means you'd be friends with someone actively trying to harm you and your freedom.
