Oh I've got a slight controller delay. Was manageable in the RPGs, Luigi and somehow F Zero GX but I feel like this game could be rough.

Petey was the first boss of the Subspace Emissary in SSBB and he got to bring nothing that made him him. No goop, no flying, no whirlwinds. He just held two cages and swung them around.
Edit: Oh I think the same cage swinging version was the final smash for the Piranha Plant in the new Smash Bros game.

Ricco Harbor secret with an input delay chokeslammed me through the announcer's table a couple of times but it's done. Kinda nerve-wracking. 2 secrets down, a bunch more to go.
Edit: Gelato 1 secret down. Oh no I've just remembered the sand bird exists.

It's cool but the movement felt extremely stiff to me, and the bits where they take away the FLUDD feel horrible.

Neat concepts and areas though

Edit: And yeah that sand bird is god awful. That's where I tapped out on it tbh. My niece mocks me about it now lol

Secret of the dirty lake down. I remembered this being a rough one so I decided to take it out early to build some morale. First try. Wasn't that bad.

Coulda been Galleom or Duon. Duon's even got the two different halves theme and the cutscenes change based on which cage you destroyed so it woulda felt fitting.

I guess I would too but I'll always be a little disappointed with what Subspace Emissary ended up being.

Luigi wins a mansion. Mario sprints there before him, gets in trouble, Luigi bails him out.
Mario goes on holiday. Invites Peach, invites Toadsworth, invites every toad he can find, welcomes a pump into his friend circle. No Luigi.
Maybe being rescued is a form of emasculation to Mario.

I like the chaos themed difficulty... curve? zigzag? scribble? Basically I like how it's over the place.

You beat then sand bird and it goes "You beat the sand bird... but can you jog across the map before Il Piantissimo who might as well have his shoes tied together and his arms stuck in vending machines like Homer Simpson can?"
"You did that? Well can you... go for a harmless little swim around a coral reef with no enemies in it and collect some red coins!?"

Probably something to do with the screen. Everything's pretty grainy too. The Ricco Harbor red coin surfing level was hard to look at.
Still though I've chased Shadow Mario out of Bianco Hills, Ricco Harbor and Gelato Beach already. Can't be that bad.

It's weird that a lot of the game seems to be made without the knowledge you could hover. Like a lot of the platforming obstacles can just be bypassed with FLUDD.

Pinna Park down, finally rescued the Yoshi in the hub world that the game had been prodding me with.
Sirena Beach. This, Noki Bay and Pianta Village are where it starts ramping up if I remember right.

Aright so here's some stuff I am still really liking about how this game controls.
-Jump -> spin in the air -> jump again lets you skip the middle jump and go straight to the triple jump. Good for when you need height but don't have room to make a run up.
-Spinning in the air lets you change where you're facing and makes the hover nozzle way more busted, feels kinda unreliable though.
-High jump -> dive -> cancel dive into ground pound so you don't overshoot it. I love this.
-Jump -> mash R + A to rapid fire bursts of water
-The thing where you keep mashing B to cancel dives into more dives is great. You even get a speed boost if there happens to be water nearby.
-The hitbox on Mario's jump feels generous. There's a lot of times enemies moved horizontally to about my waist height and the game counted it as me landing square on top of them.

This has nothing to do with the controls but I like the sounds of landing in lava and electricity in this game. Mario really sells it.

Sirena Beach Episode 3. Mysterious Hotel Delfino.
One of my absolute favorite throwbacks in any Nintendo game.
It's a Hotel. It's Mario. It's confusing.

You might need to run a few laps of the place before you start figuring it out, you might need a while to beat it.
You might even need... Instructions on how to get through the hotel.

Feels like trial and error but at least it's funny.
Edit: One nothing-level and one Shadow Mario later, Corona Mountain is open. There's some sort of horrible boat section in here.
Edit: Aright that's definitely not the best boat I've ever used in a game, but if you go slow it's manageable.

I struggled so much with the Chucksters when I played on the GameCube forever ago. I absolutely could not line up the throws correctly and the first one or two always yeeted me to death. Then I played the Switch port last year and got it in like two tries. I wonder if they made them more consistent or something in the port.

And done. 57 shines. Didn't even spray the shine gate. Fastest I've ever beaten this game though, about 5 hours.

There's a bunch of weird stuff and the difficulty curve is just all over the place but it feels really good to get it right in this game. In the other 3D Marios it never really feels like you overcame anything, more like you did something simple but you did it well. In Sunshine

I appreciate the FLUDDless levels nor the requirement to get to beat 7 stages of every world a lot. Makes the hard levels feel like real obstacles and the easy levels feel relieving rather than just simple and boring.

Or maybe I'm just sticking up for glitches and punishing design. Eh. I think it holds up. I was having fun.

My trick ended up being jumping on them so they'd stand still and do their freak out animation, quickly trying to align myself and going for it.
The hard part was there's one who'll overshoot it unless you bring him as far back as possible and the last guy needs to be near the front to make it over the gap. You only need one instances of something like that to make you start second guessing them.

The premise is still great though.
Mario: Hello.
Chuckster: You were a fool to stand 32 degrees to my left while administering that greeting. GO TO HELL!!
(Chuckster tosses Mario into the void)

I never did have a problem with the Chucksters tbh, but I'm pretty sure I was using a guide that explained what was going on in that level. I imagine it's godawful if you're just trying to figure out which one does which.

Still better than lily pads or pachinko though.

Best music and atmosphere of any Mario game. Some of my fondest memories:

  • the shadow manta ray boss. So good they brought it back for Splatoon 3.
  • The sand bird
  • The floor is lava challenge in the later village world (like world 7 I think?)
  • Spending hours messing with the durian fruits in Delfina plaza. I would play durian golf with my friend and wed see who could get it to an agreed-upon goal in the least amount of strokes.

Still got the game open, just checked.
Pianta Village (Listed as the 7th and last level on the Shine totals screen) Episode 3: The Goopy Inferno.

I didn't bother with whatever the intended route was though. I still remember a piece of ancient early 00s tech where you run to the left side, climb the big tree, jump up on to the leaf facing forward and do a high jump into a dive to fly straight to the end.

Oh, this reminds me of one of my favorite minor/major key differences. Delfino Plaza in minor key sounds, to quote the top comment, like Mario returned to Delfino Island after it was hit by a hurricane.
