DDG got popular somewhat because of the whole "less tracking" bit, but the main reason it blew up was because their search scrubbing was almost nonexistent and thus you could train dog-whistle words in and get websites tailored towards whatever Nazi nonsense you wanted. Then DDG got enough flak for this that they changed their learning algorithm (allegedly) and scrubbed the Nazi stuffs. This got the standard "woke" and "compromised" for a while, and then it switched over to "big brother" comments about how it was tracking you and whatnot.
