Tried it
Didn't like it
It felt like a poor version of an MMO and more of a single player fetch quest like it was Morrowind or something

The quests are so, so SO boring. They, and the story they tell, are the main selling point for most people, though, so if you're into that sorta thing, give it a try.

I enjoy mythic raiding in wow, though, so I really just wanted to skip ahead and raid in FFXIV. I'd like to slog through it and get to max level some day so I can really sink my teeth into raiding, but it's just such a chore. imo

the whole game is a slog, let's be real.

if it wasn't, they wouldn't give people the option to skip it but for some reason the community is very proud of dragging their nuts through a field of glass to get to the point where people actually do stuff instead of watch hour long cutscenes

ffxiv is mercilessly padded. like, 'go through an empty dungeon and interact with shiny things to advance a quest' padded. 'talk to all twelve of these dwarves' padded. 'three pages of dialogue all the time' padded.

it feels like it's trying to see how much time you're willing to let it take.

classes not having any sort of possibility room for build divergence means the materia system is one right choice and ten wrong ones.

not a lot of depth to the class design. lots of homogeny. role action is a pretty shameless admission of defeat in both trying to balance classes and in trying to come up with unique abilities, especially the tank role actions. rampart is pathetic. every tank is going to use it, taking it is a non-question, so instead of having players 'engage' with a system just give tanks their own rampart, but also instead of it being this bland ass rpg maker-tier flat mitigation, come up with a class mechanic.

autoloot plus extra inventory space coming at a premium is slimy as fuck.

also, about the mounts that you can win from some fights, they have this 'safety valve' option too where you can just win the fight 99 times and trade in the tokens you get for doing that. i think it's mounts; whatever it is, the point is the guarantee after 99 wins. i don't think setting a finish line for something like that is the healthiest choice for your players. great for your game; keeps people playing it. but think of how many more people would give up after like, 20, 30, 40 tries at these if they didn't have it. achievements actually requiring these is another level of that. it's nasty.

I just wish it had different specs for the different jobs. Like as a WHM I could spec into a more pure healing or less healing but more damage type thing. It's the only feature that is in other MMOs that I wish this had.

I know it will never happen and would require a ton more attention paid to job balance.

It's sort of has that, but for roles instead. Rather than having a healer and you have different specs for healing, you have four healers with different specs. White mage is about recovery, but scholar is about damage mitigation and sage is as close to a shadow priest as you're ever going to get.

Terrible community that encourages bad players to not improve

i can't blame the community; the game makes the community. the game never really feeds back the need to improve to the player. very easy modes are a thing. it will drag you over the finish line, kicking and screaming, if you insist.

the game also positions players that are trying to do a daily with players that are running content for the first time - two categories of player that are practically opposite - players that wants nothing more than to speedrun the content and players that might actually want to slow down and take it in.

it's a mess.

there's still no excuse for not trying to actually learn how to play your job correctly.

if you pass the content, the game is telling you you know your job well enough.

the stone, sky, sea dummies are a really good example of feedback they never, ever bothered giving the player easier access to. WoW had a class trainer that you could do a daily with; something like that where you just burn down a moderately-tuned dummy would be such a big deal in ffxiv.

classes not having any sort of possibility room for build divergence means the materia system is one right choice and ten wrong ones. i acknowledge that sam and drg have (or had) some play with skill speed, but i don't know if that's still true, and not only are they the exception and not the rule, but it doesn't exactly smack of intent.

its true, as an MMO it seems pretty poor, but thats perfect for the fanbase who tend to be antisocial mental health wrecks. Hell they're doing people a favor and it making it so you can play the game without having to interact with people lmao. Such sense of community, much wow.

Also the insistence they have in removing customizability and difficulty so the playerbase doesn't whine that they have to actually read their skill tooltips

its true, as an MMO it seems pretty poor

i would say that as a game, it's poor, but as an mmo, it's great. but that's because i also think part of being a good mmo is casting as wide a net as possible. ffxiv is accessible, and there's stuff there for everyone, but it's flawed.

but thats perfect for the fanbase who tend to be antisocial mental health wrecks.

so i think that's generally true of anyone who finds online communities and fast-tracks themselves into visibility. they find chat rooms and forums where they can be louder than anyone else and it creates an addictive feedback loop for a desperate narcissist. i don't think it's true of the average player, who gets drowned out by these types.

Hell they're doing people a favor and it making it so you can play the game without having to interact with people lmao

i'm a fan of that. some people get really anxious having to play with others. some people just want to experience the game and treat group content as you might treat a visit to the dentist.

Also the insistence they have in removing customizability and difficulty so the playerbase doesn't whine that they have to actually read their skill tooltips

man, the customizability thing. it really feels like they have the materia system because WoW had the gem system, and for little other reason. the gem system in WoW worked because you had options as you progressed in ilevel; take enhancement shaman. up until you had certain pieces, it was best to run full haste or full crit or full mastery, i forget which, back in MoP. it meant that, yes, there was an objectively best build you could be running, but you had incentive to try others along the way, as well as just as much incentive to stay with one you liked for the way it handled.

in ffxiv it used to be that you needed certain amounts of skill speed and stuff. accuracy existed -- like, what a boner that was.
