Sophie 2 was peak atelier for me. Only thing I really like more with Ryza 3 is the streamlined gathering.

I've yet to start the Dusk trilogy and I told myself I'd go through those before I touch anything else Atelier. I'm actually not even sure if I'll start Ryza's trilogy after that.

I need to play the first two trilogies at some point, but doing that after playing Mysterious will probably be rough

That's why I always say to go with the "play the one that is the furthest back that you want to go." Yeah there are reasons to go back to the older games as they do things that are worth playing, but there are just so many improvements to each game over time that going back can be rough. Iris and Mana Khemia are kind of exceptions due to being so different, but even then there is a *lot* of jank on the core systems that you have to overcome.

And I've made it further in Ryza 3. I'd put it above Ryza 2 now as once you get past its wall of an opening the changes in the systems are pretty fun. Keys let you do utter nonsense in pretty fun ways and can make the alchemy get pretty complex if it continues on its trajectory for complexity. Super Traits are basically just there to balance out Sophie 2's utter nonsense traits as far as I've seen, but there are still some pretty fun janky bits still to work with (it's trivial to get infinite Gems something like 2-3 hours in... that's pretty goofy). The battle system is pretty bad, but I'm here for the alchemy and the alchemy lets you dump on any battle the game can throw at you so it's whatever.

I really recommend Mana Khemia. Ghost girl Pamela :D and other reasons it just feels good. Surprised how much it is like Escha and Logy.

She is? She's not in the Dusk games that I am aware of. I was pretty surprised how they just threw all these characters at me in Escha and Logy. It was like here's Nio, here's some shopkeeper here's some suspicious lady. Here's someone else who throws syringes (Lucille) It just seemed like the party filled up fast once things got going.

No, but abusing the alchemy system will and is encouraged.

Pretty much. Grinding in Atelier technically can make you OP, but the amount needed to truly matter is kind of massive versus a normal RPG. On the flip side you can just dank around in the alchemy and start tossing tactical nukes in a couple of minutes. Like, in my current run in Ryza 3 they made a huge tutorial about the first boss about how you needed to mess around with the break bar to make sure that the boss didn't get to do their super attack, and I just flat out splatted the boss well before it even got to even start its super attack.

Make something that increases your Defense or Evasion. You not making the item doesn't mean it doesn't exist. >.>
