I played for a few hours here and there, it seemed like there wasn't anything that you needed to pay for, characters seemed unlockable through normal means. Certain quests required certain character types and if you didn't have a character unlocked you could find yourself playing a character you hated to complete a quest. "Just don't do the quest!"
