People have been booting up old games to download their DLC before the eShop is gone, but finding out that their cartridges can no longer be used, even if they've been left fresh in the box since they were bought.

Apparently some games like FE Echoes, Pokemon X/Y/OR/AS, and Persona Q have large batches of poorly built cartridges, and over the years the chips in them simply died.

Now the people who need to play them before the shop closure are stuck re-buying them digitally (since no way can they replace the cartridge in time). A rare L for physical gaming.

The Persona Q and Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire ones I know have been known issues for years now. Speculation was it was just a bad batch of cartridges in that release window seeing as those games came out at practically the same time. Also saw someone on /v/ mention that their copy of Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright died so something to keep in mind too. That one also came out around the same window as PQ and ORAS

First time hearing about issues on FE Echoes especially considering it came out like 3 years later.

I love my Gen 4 carts.

This worries me. Maybe I should move all my pokemon to pokebank and home >_>

When Nintendo discontinues cart physical production and shuts down digital downloads, piracy is morally acceptable. Obviously its still illegal but they dont have the moral right to complain if someone does it

At this point just pirate them, tbh. Screw the manufacturers that can't properly make games and Nintendo that refuses to keep these games available.

Yeah Persona Q died on me and that really sucked. I do have ORAS but I hope that isn't dead either. It's the only semi-decent pokemon game on the 3DS

Oh that's a shame. The fe gaiden remake is pretty good. Wonder if it emulates well

Video game makers have always cared less about preservation than the fans. If they can't make a dollar or yen off it, it's useless trash to them. But they still will sue people for trying to preserve that trash

Yeah I heard about how they designed the 3DS carts, they didn't care if they lasted for a long time. Might be wise to create backups...
