I'm legitimately asking here for a purpose of being educated on the subject because there is legitimacy to it: if one posts a gif with no intention of it being used to mock or belittle black people, but just to have a funny or appropriate reaction to show how they feel at that moment, how would one know if they're doing digital blackface or just posting a funny image?

I think it's pretty obvious when a gif is being used in an offensive way, regardless of color. But there has to be some nuance to this, and you can just make a blanket statement like "all your gifs need to match your heritage".

I mean, if I want to give someone a "Yes" gif, is there really any difference in intention if I, as a man of both Italian and Puerto Rican descent, choose Mike Myers from Wayne's World giving a thumbs up, Super Mario giving a thumbs up, Shaq shaking his head yes, or George Lopez also shaking his head yes?

As someone that's half Italian, half Puerto Rican, my gif and meme selection is now very limited.

CNN knew exactly what they were doing with that tweet. It's bait. Just look at the 26M views it has gotten compared to their other tweets which average around 150k-200k views.

The author explains the findings here.

Here is why I think the study is interesting. There is a fairly substantial body of causal evidence that people discriminate based on names. These studies use experimental designs, so the causal effects can't be doubted. For example, they show that resumes with names that employers interpret as black are less likely to be called for an interview relative to more white sounding names.
