Yeah, I thought the first film was practically begging to be left as a standalone flick, until they said that they were following it up with a musical. Now I'm all in.

I felt that Joker was a fine one-off character study, and that a sequel is just blatant and unnecessary serialization by greedy Hollywood executives chasing the next big "cinematic universe."

In addition, the ambiguity in Joker was part of the main theme of the film. Did Arthur really kill that woman? Was Thomas Wayne really his dad? Does it even matter? What was real and what was played out in his head was never (and imo, should never) be objectively laid out. It's not a mystery to be solved, it's left to the audiences' interpretation what events they believe really happened in the fiction of the film.

A sequel, done poorly, would inevitably have to address some of those elements and collapse them to a single reality. It's like David Chase telling a reporter that Tony Soprano really dies, 14 years after the series ends. It saps all of the interest and speculation out of the dialogue when you're just told "oh the answer is this."

That being said, with some of the reveals about the direction they're going with this sequel, the studio seems to be making decisions that play off the themes of the first movie. Musicals are unique in that the songs and dances are usually not questioned by the audience or characters of the film. People break out into a number, it either moves the story along or focuses on a specific character's motivations (or just shows off a bunch of women) and then continues to the next scene. So this psuedo-realm created by a musical break could be an interesting mechanic used by the film to create more of that ambiguity.

I'm pretty excited about this. Other than TAS, most HQ origins have been blurbs or flashbacks. It will be nice to see her full descent, manipulation and psychological break. Gaga has shown really good acting chops and you can't go wrong with having a screen partner like Joaquin.

I like it.

not every sequel is part of a cinematic universe, sometimes it's just a sequel

Instead of Joker Origins 2 it's probably more like Harley Quinn Origins 1 featuring Joker. Getting more into her version of reality and how his presence affected it. Anything part of his reality would blend with her belief in him and there still wouldn't be a definite answer to anything.

Looks good actually. Not really looking forward to the musical side of a sequel from a really good non musical movie lol.

Ya know I would be more accepting if the musical was because of a psychological aspect in the movie. Would make for a great 3rd movie without the musical.

It's going to be a musical? Now I'm really interested.

And this will probably be a musical in the way Chicago was a musical. It will have dialogue and roll along like standard cinema, but then there will be bouts of delirium and delusion that happen to break out into song and dance.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if she just happened to be a fangirl who became obsessed with him after the events of the first movie and the whole thing is (possibly) her own delusion of going out and committing crimes with him. Joaquin Phoenix could even end up playing a radically different version of The Joker in this movie because of it.

I don't see how they'd make the movie without that being the case tbh. Like Raikuro said, I'm betting this is more of a Harley movie than a Joker one and she's going to see the whole thing as a romantic musical.

That was just an initial concept, not how it played out..ending is still open to interpretation
