I miss those times where it was a new story per episode.

I miss when episodes were just random bullshit happening instead of the show just being a mouthpiece for Matt & Trey's dumbass libertarian political views

I haven't watched since the season finale where the entire internet was reset or some shit after Mr. Garrison became president. Did it go back to standalone stories after that point or stick to ongoing stories for a while?

It was a while back probably, the one where Kyle's dad was an internet troll, that's all I remember about whichever season that was.

You'll be pretty happy. A lot of the last episodes focus on the kids(there's an occasional reference to past episode) and they don't make randy a main character in every single episode (he was getting boring and he used to be one of my favourite characters)

Also why do people still say "the four boys" when Butters has been a main character(way more than Kenny) since like season 5

season 25 and 26 are standalone episodes. it seems like they're keeping the longform stories to the specials now (which are basically 4-5 episode stories each)

Most are standalone. The only continuous arcs were like 18-20 during election season or whatever. They keep the long stuff to the specials.
