It's a fantastic game.

No way close to the original Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 or Icewind Dale, all of which ran on the infinity engine.

I don't think the writing is as mature or deep as Baldur's Gate, companions will be up for debate based on preference.

Turn-based combat as well.

You don't need to have played the original to play the sequel. Whilst I like D:OS, it has some pacing issues mainly in the first act that hinder the experience, Fort Joy in D:OS2's intro is much better / well rounded as a starting experience.

Great game.

No, you don't need to play the first one story wise, but you will miss a few little nods here and there. The lore won't be confusing, but you won't have the "oh shit" moments if you skip the first one.

Like the above person said, yeah, the writing isn't the most mature all the time, but I like that it can be downright silly at times.

I haven't played it yet either, though I want to. Many people say it's the best contemporary cRPG that's been released. I beat Divinity Original Sin last year, and I ended up getting bored with how each battle played out. I wasn't all that invested in the story either. I loved the fuck out of Baldur's Gate, though.

Gameplay wise its one of the greatest RPGs ever made. If you are looking for a deep and interesting story though, you may be disappointed. You dont need to play anything else before jumping into 2

It's less pop off and more like, "ahhh, so that's the motivation behind that character."

It won't ruin the experience for you, but some of the nuance will be missed.

The combat is much better. For one, high ground actually does something in this game. The AP system is reworked (you only get 6 per turn, but everything costs less), and your inventory is streamlined (like you can just dump everything you don't want into a "junk" folder/list/whatever it is, and sell it all with one click instead of doing it piece by piece).

I played co-op with a friend until act 2 before getting kinda overwhelmed with the amount of stuff to do.

I plan to start my own campaign one day now that my friend has already moved on.

It's a great game, but not for everyone. It's basically a turn based strategy game, and you'll likely have to take battles slowly (especially on harder difficulties) since the game can be pretty challenging + punishing in certain battles if you make a mistake. If you do play it, it's recommended to use some of the Gift Bag features that are within game. Certain ones are busted and shouldn't be used if you want a challenge, but others like the Fort Joy respec mirror, fast movement out of combat, and restoring your source points by resting (among others) are such great quality of life additions that can help alleviate some of the flaws of the game.

And no, you don't have to play the 1st one to know what's going on. There is 1 ally character that was a playable character in the 1st game and the leader of a major faction within the game is a returning character (and there's probably some other references to the 1st game), but otherwise 2 is pretty self contained.

as far as mechanics go, I can't think of a better turn-based RPG.

the game allows you a lot of freedom, and experimentation is rewarded.

as far as the story goes, it's pretty decent. it's not going to win any best narrative awards, but it's still entertaining. the characters are full of personality, and the writing can be pretty fun at times. also, even though it's a sequel, it takes place a thousand years later, iirc, and while you might come across familiar figures, it works as its own thing, too.

overall, it's one of the best RPGs that I can remember playing.

Never got far into it mostly cause one of the friends I played with was "that guy" who aggros everyone he can and intentionally makes dumb choices. Still plan on giving it a try eventually, but I haven't had the urge to redownload it in a while.

yea, if there's one issue that I had with it, it was that it could be really difficult at times.

it's one of those games where levels matter, so even having enemies be a level higher than you can end up wrecking you.

It was difficult. I never got off the first island. You had to break armor with physical or magic before you could do damage.

Sometimes I thought I had a good strategy but then something happens that I didn't expect. It's absolutely worth trying though to see if it is your thing. I didn't grow up playing a lot of crpgs though so I got frustrated too quickly probably.

It's a decent game. Especially if you are into turn based combat. But if you aRe into action RPG more than turn based you should just stick with Diablo style titles. Darksiders Genesis is a cool new story from that series and is like diablo
