The reason is simple. Not many people know literal rocket science, nor do they know much about the car and battery manufacturing process. As a result, the brand appeal that he previously built up was strong, and his paid (and unpaid) surrogates loudly proclaiming that he was a visionary genius seemed like it might hold water.
