And silver being used to combat supernatural beings like vampires with silver bullet in myths and media is probably because they are anti microbial.

Probably back in yore, before germ theory is discovered, people notice food on silver tableware spoil slower. Back then they believe in miasma or similar stuff, so they believe silver can hold back evil spirits/miasma and in the myths that eventually found its way to modern media carry that superstition with silver weapons.

According to TV Tropes, yes that's part of the reason. It was also associated with the moon or the sun which has a whole bunch of mystical connotations
