This game is obviously going for a more serious tone than the original. It makes sense in this context to lessen the silliness of Ashley and being a pervert with her miniskirt. Anyway, luckily we have Capcom making this game and not dorks like you.

Also, I agree that the controls haven't aged in the sense that the whole game was built around it and it still feels decent to play. Buuut I also have a feeling that once we play this, we'll never want to go back. The ability to move and shoot will add so much. Enemies can be faster and more aggressive now and combat in general can just be vastly improved.

The main take I'm seeing from RE4 superfans is this is now their favorite version of the game, but it also doesn't "replace" the original. It's more like they just have another amazing version of one of their favorite games on top of the original.

I play NES games, don't talk about to me about RE4 controls being somehow hard to go back to go.

There was a gen 1 remake like four years ago and it was better received than the actual last two generations. Also Metroid Prime is 20 years old, Resident Evil 4 is 18 years old, and Dead Space is 15 years old so its alright that they get remakes.

One of the best remakes ever came out six years after the original so I never really got the time period argument.

If you can make it better, do it.

I think the remake discussion in the time since then has changed significantly as visual and design advancements have gotten slower. However, while RE4 mostly holds up it still shows its age a bit, thats true even for Dead Space. On the other hand The Last of Us didnt need it. Of course this will also depend on the game that is getting the remake.

I'm fine with any port, remaster, or remake that's done well. Not everyone gets to play something the first time around. For example, I didn't play any version of The Last of Us besides the original, but I think it's a good thing that it's no longer stuck in PS3 jail.

TLOU PS5 Remake I would say is probably the most egregiously worthless of any major remake that's been done.

I think the last of us only made people feel weird because of the PS4 remaster edition.

I dont think anybody will argue that they didnt do a good job with The Last of Us, it was just unnecessary. You can play the remaster on PS5 and it holds up.

Funny you should say that, because the PS4 release came out like a year after the original and was absolutely derided by some people as being 'unnecessary', while the PS5 version came out 9 years after the original.

My point is none of these are worthless because not everyone had a PS3 or PS4. Some people are new gamers or just plain skipped on the original and would be interested in a version with a fresh coat of paint. The gamer outrage over the PS5 version was and continues to be ridiculous and is just a byproduct of people's lingering resentment over TLOU2.

I just wish they'd milk a game I actually want to replay

The release of the TV show caused TLoU sales numbers to spike. Amusingly, going by the UK charts, people are buying more copies of the PS4 remaster than the PS5 remake. Did you forget that PS5 owners can play PS4 games on their console? Hell, the remaster's even enhanced for PS5.

I've always been curious on what people mean by the controls. Like is it button mapping, animations, the way the gameplay from controller to screen interacts, the way Leon moves?

It's shooting specifically that I believe has aged poorly.

And for what it's worth, I accept just being in the minority here, especially because I wish I did not think they had aged rather poorly. Though I do think it's a bit much when people suggest it's perfect by today standards. I don't think it'd be as well received at all if it came out today with only better graphics.

PS4 version not only works on all PS5s, it even has optimization for it.

I know they can, but there's nothing wrong with having a newer version with updated graphics. That's objectively a positive unless it's like a Silent Hill HD Collection situation. I'd get people being miffed if the PS5 version was a bad port, but from what I've seen it's not. Other companies have done way more egregious rereleases than updating a 9 year old game and no one cared.

No the PS4 remaster was quite necessary because as you say, PS3 jail. In fact it coming so close to the original release was like GTAV actually a good thing because for a huge portion of the audience it was effectively a new game. A majority of the first games sales were actually the remastered version not the original. If theres a criticism of Remastered its that its not a great remaster, its basically a 1080p port with an added photo mode and Left Behind included.

By contrast, not only can you play Remastered on the PS5, its included in the PS+ Collection (for now). There is not the same audience for the remake there was for the remaster and I think thats reflected in the sales numbers.

Also I have zero resentment to Part II, really good game and the manufactured backlash from the leak was shameful. I just dont see much of a case for the remake.

I just don't believe the internet would've gotten out of shape without The Last of Us 2 resentment. The worst that would've happened is people going "oh, I don't need that" and moving on.

One of the best remakes I've ever played was probably the remake to the first RE.

The fact that it retained everything from the original, reworked the mansion somewhat without making it lose it's impact, and then the addition of the Lisa Trevor subplot really fleshed the game out.

Everywhere? People on sites like Reddit complain all the time about Skyrim getting too many versions/ports.

People were definitely complaining about Skyrim Anniversary Edition. Loads of ports get complaints. It is odd though as there arent that many remakes for a platform you can already play the original on. TLOU Part I is an unusual example.

I've mostly seen people give Skyrim a free pass, although I might have been in different places.

Memes aren't necessarily complaining though. If anything that's normalization. People just think it's funny when Skyrim gets a re-release.

I kinda think TLoU to PS5 might as well have been a port. It would have been fine, and I get rereleasing it because of the HBO series.

But they made it from the group up, which is probably why it's more expensive than Part II was, so I didn't get it because I didn't want to pay that much for something that is basically the exact same game in every aspect as was already free with PS+ (and super cheap otherwise).

I didn't complain about it, but I do think it's unnecessary, pretty sure sales reflect that.

I love to shit on The Last of Us but the "discourse" over Part I is the dumbest shit.

Personally I don't think many (if any) games from PS3 era onwards are justified in being remade as I don't think graphics/gameplay has advanced enough to make too much of a difference to the overall experience. I could pick up a PS3 game now and the controls wouldn't feel out of place.

If you look at how much of a leap there was between PS1 and PS2 and likewise from PS2 to PS3, then compare that to, say, original Dead Space and the remake, its like night and day.

So yes 6 years between RE1 and Remake is the equivalent to 20+ years in this era

The problems with TLoU were threefold: it had already gotten a remaster, it was $70, and gameplay-wise it was pretty much entirely faithful to the original, showing how little the remake was needed. Personally, I don't really care (I don't care for ND games in general), but I get why people thought it was a waste of time and development resources.

Eh, most of the stuff that was good then is still good now. I think products like Mass Effect Legendary Edition are generally good enough.

The problem with Jak is that they didn't reach that point though! It never settled, never got comfortable, didn't hit juuuust that right sweet spot to then go and make the same game over and over again to great effect.

Ratchet reached that in the second game, and then just made the same game 5 or 6 more times and people still ate it up!

That's because the R&C formula is better than the Jak formula.

Because Jak never reached the formula it needed! They kept messing with stuff.

Jak 1 was better than Ratchet 1, easy. Then they'd tried cooking up something with Jak 2 and 3, good games in their own right, but very different and still failing to establish the identity of what a Jak game was.

Going Commando was a winning formula that was better than any of the Jak and Daxter games, and they've just been building off of Going Commando since then to great effect. They could make another R&C game after Spiderman 2 and nobody would question it.

Jak 4...I don't even know what Jak 4 would be, but I'd love to see it!
