If it didn't, it was a hell of a placebo.

There's an argument to be made that bits of saliva might have helped the connection, but personally i think it was just the act of resetting it, with extra steps

SNES? Why are your SNES cartridges having issues? The NES had issues and it was mainly because it was side-loaded.

if it was only NES, then why do I remember blowing into my SNES and N64 carts?

Because you corroded the metal by getting them wet, thus tricking yourself into thinking you needed to blow on them to fix them?

It sort of works?

If the reason the contacts aren't working is because of an abundance of dust and debris, blowing in them could fix the issue. But you're much better off just cleaning them properly. And as said, saliva might reduce the lifespan of the parts.

I remember blowing into Genesis carts and it usually fixed the game not booting up.

Most of the time just reinserting the game did the thing you thought blowing into it did.

Never had one of those, but i do recall doing it with Gameboy Games (Color and Advance), but far more prominently with ps1 and ps2 memory cards.

I think generally you didnt need to unless the system was really old or if the cartridges werent kept well.

The NES was notorious because beyond the contacts, the "vcr" shape somehow made the contacts even more unreliable iirc. Top loading consoles didnt require blowing to anywhere near the extent the NES did.

Hell I dont think I blew into my Genesis carts a single time growing up. Though these days they need more maintenance.
