There's 2 recent films that I watched where this seems to happen. Chronicle (2012) and Godzilla (2014).

Both films weren't "amazing" but were pretty fun with Michael B Jordan's character Steve in Chronicle and Bryan Cranstons character in Godzilla carrying their respective movies hard. I only noticed this when the moment they're both killed off, the movie just becomes less enjoyable.

Not sure how hot a take this is, but gonna say (QT movie spoilers):

Django Unchained after Waltz and DiCaprio kill each other. Still a good overall movie, but that last act just isnt nearly as strong as all before it.

I can't edit the topic title, but I guess I should've said "less enjoyable" or something.

Bourne Supremacy - Marie dies in the opening act. This was the first time I became painfully aware of the trope in which the writers don't know what to do with the girlfriend / love interest in the sequel, so they just kill her off to give our hero an excuse to go all loose-cannon. I was particularly pissed because I liked their interactions in the first movie (particularly when she just walks into the bank and asks for info after he painstakingly schooled on the superspy approach to getting it), and was really looking forward to seeing that dynamic expanded upon in the sequel.

I can't think of a movie that was more thoroughly ruined for me because of a premature / unnecessary death.

TLJ - SNOKE
I was getting a kick out of him and also that was where the trilogy's chances really went from bad to worse.

Yeah, even a self aware movies like Deadpool 2 also fell into that trope as well.

Chronicle is a solid one.

MBJ had the charisma that drew you in. Dane DeHaan is great but works best off of other people. The third guy (whatever the hell his name is) was not up to the task.

Yeah, DP 2 was great overall, but it majorly started off on the wrong foot, and it took me a bit to un-sour my mood. Killing off Vanessa was bad enough, but it was the '4th wall' opening credits that followed that really pissed me off: "DIRECTED BY: OMG DID THEY REALLY JUST DO THAT?!" Yes, you morons, of course you just did that, it was the most obvious fucking thing you could have done, stop patting yourselves on the back for being 'shocking.' Technically they undo her death in the mid-credits, but that's not really the point; the point is that the writers don't know how to handle a love interest character after our hero wins her, so they contrive a reason to get her out of the picture (usually via an untimely death) rather than actually develop their relationship further.

I never read into the exact reasons that Tim Miller walked away from directing the sequel, but I like to believe that that was one of them.

Incidentally, Kingsman 2 may have fell flat overall, but it will always get major props from me for deliberately veering away from this trope.
