Frankenstein

Some people like the brutish monster from the James Whale films and Peggy Webring play. Others prefer the authenticity of the articulate creature from the Mary Shelley novel. No matter what happens, no adaptation is going to please everyone.

Batman

This one has mostly been resolved. While there are occasional comics or cartoons based off of the lighter take on the character, DC and WB have really doubled and tripled down on the Dark Knight being the canon incarnation of the character.

Spider-Man

Some want him in high school. Some argue that most of the stories have featured an adult Peter. Some want him to be an actual, genuine nerd of low social status and average looks. Others want him to be the handsome, stylish, and inexplicably unpopular loner. And let's not even get started on the shipping wars.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Some people want Pizza Time! Others say that the popular version of the 1980s is a bastardization and commercialization of a much darker vision. Attempts to reconcile the two fanbases have met with lukewarm results at best.

Devil May Cry

Is the best song in the franchise Devils Never Cry, or Bury the Light?

Skateboarding community:

Some think Nyjah is the GOAT of street skating. Others think he isn't a true skater and is just a jock

heck he never got skater of the year despite doing a bunch of insane stuff last year that has never been done before lol

Online parkour community:

Some think the incorporation of movements from other disciplines like gymnastics, tricking, and breakdancing isn't parkour and is instead "freerunning". others disagree.

i honestly disagree too because the guy who came up with the freerunning term (sebastian foucan) doesn't even agree with what people are referring to as "freerunning".

I thought the first movie was nearly universally loved by TMNT fans of every type.

The director loosely adapted the comics into a movie, then he was fired and the studio hired a new director to come in and shoot scenes involving comedy out of the 1987 cartoon. It managed to get both camps and would likely make a good template for modern retellings -- if it could be replicated.

I wouldn't recommend hiring someone with the intention of firing them and having someone else shift the tone as much as possible.
