I'm just hearing nothing but good stuff about House of Dragon, but instead of watching that I was watching the Ring of Power show instead (I know, dumb decision on me end), I'm just wondering if I have to know any lore before getting into it.

game of thrones is a phenomenal show, especially the first few seasons.

house of the dragon s1 is really good too. you could watch either first honestly but both are great

it's a prequel, that takes place almost 200 years before GoT, so I think you should be able to enjoy it independently of the main series.

iirc, you might hear about some of the characters from HoD in GoT/ASoIaF books, but they might be referred to as historical references, and not too much info given about them (but it's been a while, so I could be wrong).

besides that, GoT seasons 1-4 are really good, but it starts to dip in quality somewhere in season 5, but it's still good until season 6, IMO, and seasons 7&8 are trash.

HoD is a prequel so it's better to watch it first actually

I wouldn't think anyone would enjoy HOD without watching GOT. It's very political and drawn out without a lot of action in HOD. I only enjoyed it because of the GOT references and knew what to expect.

Except HoD is a prequel based on the books Fire and Blood which are basically history books. Watching HoD first might make more things in GoT make sense
