I know there may be books and animated stuff but these eras are off limits for some reason

Everything either has to fit in between 3 and 4 or 6 and 7.

Let's see what the galaxy was like when the jedi were in power or what a post empire (and empire 2.0) galaxy looks like...unless somehow palpatine returns again

People have been asking for knights of the Old Republic trilogy for a long time now. I can only assume that Disney is hold on to those stories until the last possible moment when every drop of Goodwill has been drained from the original trilogy. Right when everybody is about to give up on Star wars, they'll drop a KOTOR announcement and everyone will immediately forget about their disappointment and get hyped again.

Because of the fear it won't sell.

Star Wars as a franchise, according to its shareholders and owners, is in a very tenuous financial position.

You and I may not give a crap and just want to see some nice stories, but for the moneybags who invested in it, they want safe returns.

So be ready for us to continue to get stuff in the Imperial era, because that sets the fewest pacemakers fluttering.

I think that those areas are still relatively off-limits because they are more open-ended and thus have more room for a large narrative push. As in they could do entire series of movies so they don't want too much out there to get in the way.

It's not live action but that's what they are doing with their High Republic era stuff. It's planned narrative construction all in the same era. With a bunch of comic books, books, etc building out an entirely new "world" (well it's the same world but with new characters, political climate, time-frame, villains organizations, etc).

I think before they tap into the more recent pre-prequel, post-sequel, or Old Republic eras, they kinda want to get it planned out like they are doing High Republic.

Because this way the stories write themselves more than they would otherwise. It's way easier to write a story when you know this guy does x here and then y 20 years later. They have so many major events in their timeline that if the writers stay within in then they basically just have to keep filling in more and more gaps.

I think they will eventually, but like Cyric mentioned, it's obviously a potential risk. Everything we've gotten so far has been tied to characters or eras that the average fan is already familiar with.

What's the point? Why create a completely new set of characters, politics, locations etc that need some kind of baggage of the massive albatross that is Star Wars? So you can sell lightsaber and Droid toys? You can already do that with the existing, fleshed out & tested settings.

At some point it's just Cloverfield syndrome. I take a random movie or TV show set in space and start spraypainting the Star Wars logo everywhere and play a snippet of the imperial march when something scary happens and now you want to watch it?

Yeah, the people in charge are clearly risk-averse, but I really wish they would go completely new.

There's going to be a miniseries called The Acolyte which takes place 100 before before episode I. We might see Yoda without his cane.

Maybe they should set it 1,000 years in the future, where the event of the original trilogy are now myths and legends.

The sequel trilogy screwed up lore to the point that there literally isn't anything they can do with the story characters inbetween ep4-7. At least not anything major or worth investing in like Luke's academy, lol.

There isn't much they can do in 7+ either unless they jump ahead by decades.

And something in the old republic era would be essentially soft rebooting the entire fanchise. So new everything pretty much and there's no guarantee it'll click with audiances. Same for the high republic era.
