members of that community were the ones who came up with "Latinx" - non-binary Spanish speakers.

besides, I was just using that as an example of how a majority can try to silence a minority because of terminology the majority might not like using and/or try to dismiss its validity because "only a small few use it".

it's only a "replacement" for those who use it/are fine with using it, but it's not even that.

Latino/Latina aren't officially being replaced; it's that non-binary/non-gendered/etc. people want to feel as if they're represented, and some people accommodate that, like a lot of educational institutions.

they're not referring to singular men or singular women as a Latinx person, but rather the group as Latinx, since some people don't fit so neatly within the male/female dichotomy.

a male is still Latino and a female Latina, but if you don't feel like either of those fit you, then what?

I was responding to your previous post when you posted that, but for we know, the guy you were responding to could have been facetious and/or trolling, since some people don't take kindly to the use of "Latinx" when you use it, but either way, as far as I know, he's a poster whose stance we don't officially know.

I wouldn't say "Latinx" was "rejected", as it has grown in use since its inception, and one of the main reasons why it's getting this pushback is because it has reached the public's consciousness.

not to say it'll one day be the accepted term, but my initial point in this topic was just because a few people might use it, its value isn't somehow invalidated.

also, when I was talking about it not being a replacement, I meant the singular "Latino" and not some general one.

as for the poster, it wasn't meant as a specific dig at them; it's just that it's really anecdotal to use them as an example when you can find pretty much any poster on this board to make an argument.

with that said, just because it was "officially turned down", that more than 90% of Spanish speakers might be against it and/or not know what it means, etc., it doesn't mean that those things can't change in the future - "Latinx" has been used by more people now than it has in the past, and more people are identifying that way.
