I get fucked over by taxes. The more I make the more they take so I get very little more in my check. I grossed 7 grand last month but only netted like 4 grand.

Pretty sure my profession Is known around here cause I work so much I tend to talk about it alot. But I'm a correctional officer. Was a busy 8 days. Busted two for drugs busted 2 more on the day we did random drug testing. Found 2 shanks. Busted a dude for buck and found some more in a common area. And found a crap ton of tattooing equipment. Normally I don't care about tattoo stuff but if I find it I gotta take it. Plus had a dude claiming medical emergency this week cause he got staph infection from a tattoo he got

Funny story on the buck. I may have perhaps not noticed had he not made it super obvious by quickly trying to hide the bottle when I rounded the corner. Fucking kids. A old head wouldn't have flinched and just slowly got up and walked away drawing little attention to himself.

I'd just do overnight hospital escorts and ride out the week with wifi.

I was actually scheduled to go sit In the hospital with one but it was my 8th day and I was so tired I overslept and called in claiming I'd be late. Ended up on time anyways cause I know how to put it in high gear on getting ready for work.

You don't get to choose where you work though. Hospital trips are usually reserved for the favorites. I was picked cause LT. Was taking sympathy on me for the fact it was my 8th day straight.

I hate hospital trips though. It's boring and I get home later than normal.

Funny thing is we never get told what we make a hour. We get told it's a salary position but we do infact get paid extra if we work more. Government has to be confusing.

My base pay is like 35k year I wanna say. Started at 32 but you get a mandatory raise every year for your first 6 years.

I know I cleared 55k one year though. But that's considering I took almost 2 months off cause I broke my hand

Well he's a celebrity and you have to consider I live in a state that has a lower cost of living compared to some places. The job I do here pays 90k a year in California cause it's higher cost of living there.

Oddly I used to back yard wrestle. I told my brother if we ever did it again just to relive our youth I'd pretty much steal that gimmick but as a CO instead of a cop. Would make it a hardcore wrestler gimmick though so all thr weapon use would be fair game.

Oh shit. Didn't know that. Figured he was playing a cop. Cops are stereotyped as wearing blue and his video involved a cop car and what more looked like jail cells rather than prison. Cop cars don't take inmates to prison. Why I mentioned that. Only time a cop car comes into our facility is to pick one up or return one that had to attend a court case.

I'm able to afford renting a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house off that. About a half acre lot I'd guesstimate. And that includes having a car bill to pay. It's tight if I don't get the overtime but we have several things we don't absolutely have to have we could get rid of. Like first thing xomes to mind is due to my job I eat out most every night. We pick two places every night we put our money in envelopes and write our order on it and a officer goes and gets the food. I could just bring my own food in

Ugh. If we didn't have such a disgustingly, unjustifiable large prison population we could close most of those down and you could have reasonable staff.

Yeah you wouldn't be told if you have a salary position. Really nice that you are salary with the ability to get overtime pay. That's not common.
General rule is divide your salary by 2048 to get your estimated hourly which in the case is $17.08/hr.
Not sure how the overtime factors in since taxes are different for that.

Ha no. It has nothing to do with inmate population and a lot to do with a mix of some people ain't got the balls for this job and the others can't handle the circus that is the management.

Our inmate population is at more than double what it should be. Most prisons in the US shouldn't exist

I do find it funny thatvwith overtime some staff make more a year than the warden. Their was a captain who was pissed about that.

Note that those staff volunteered for that much overtime. We Have a guy that used to only take 2 days off a month and he did that shit for 4 years. He had a plan though. Retitement is based on consecutive best 4 years and he's from Mexico and plans on returning. He's gonna live like a king on his retirement

No I was just too worn out from the week to even play video games and wanted people to talk to. Most people I talk to are day people so I only get so long to talk to them of a day. I've seen weirder ama topics. Never did one myself but it looked like a easy way to get a conversation rolling.

Trust me officers sleep on the job. Somehow I managed not to this week. But I feel that's cause I was on roll finding shit. When I find something like a shank it gives me a boost of energy. I never fully sleep on thr job like some though. When I nod off any slight noise wakes me. And I'm never out for more than 10 minutes at a time cause my body is on a schedule to get up and walk around every 15 minutes

The shortstaffing of prisons actually got some leniency given to the officers on duty when eastein died iirc. One admitted to being asleep the other was on Facebook or something. But their time sheets showed both had been working Hella overtime. Like one was on his third 16 hour shift in a row.

Do you want to do anything else for a career? I'd definitely encourage FBI or another fed level security job. Least you'll be provided locality pay so you're not just breaking even every month

Like I get that youre on the other side of the fence/cell, but at the end of the day, you will be spending most of your LIFE in a damn jail.

I love my job outside the overtime. I've actually never lasted much more than a year at any other job before and here I am pushing 4 years. It's made me grow as a person. I used to be timid shy and no backbone. Now I have zero issue with talking to random strangers.

Most days it's the easiest job you could ask for. Especially if you do your job like me. I walk into a dorm that I'm usually assigned to and the inmates get their shit straight without me having to say a word. So at that I get to sit down and just walk around every 15 minutes. That's the hardest part. You have to make an example out of a few. But once you do word spreads and the job does itself.

Yeah me and inmate went over the math once and with him specifically by the time I'm done if I pull a full career out of it. I'll be locked up in that prison longer than him. Only differences are I get paid better I get better food and I get to go home and sleep on a nicer bed. Due to overtime that's about all I have over them

I worked 8 days straight of 12.25 hours a day. Yeah I'm tired. Didnr even get to enjoy my day off as I had to do shopping laundry and clean the house.

And I worked those days hard enough people are joking about it. I was constantly calling a Sgt cause I had something going on.

Whats the last thing you ate?

Chicken sandwhich with cheese and mayo. It's my go to to bring to work incase I don't like where they order from. It's not my favorite but I literally never get burnt out on it. I ate one for every meal everyday even weekends for a whole school year once.
