I thought about this just the other day. There was this youtuber that talked about another youtuber that youtubed the same kind of videos. This other youtuber is not only an obvious cis woman but refers to herself as she/her, but the person I watched still had to go they/them when it wasn't needed. Mostly I think it's just a Gen Z thing, they're growing up in a more genderless world so it comes more natural to them. Those speakers amplified everything, and if it was flying overhead, you went deaf) She pulled around and just started screaming and yelling. "Do I look like a sir?" the_pika posted... shakespeare, thy/thine, etc. But it has been used and continues to be used because it can be used as a placeholder when the question giver does not know the person being talked about. I teach middle school English in South Korea and I give them this example: Me: Hey everyone! We have a new science teacher starting this year. Students: Oh neat! What's his name? Me: Well actually, it's a woman. And her name is.... Or flip it with "her name" and "it's a man" instead. It's far simpler to respond with "What's their name?" without any need for correction. They/their/them as a singular noun has been used for stuff like this forever. It's why it has outlasted thy/thine that you keep bringing it up. And it's why it's important to talk about how the singular form of these words predates Shakespeare because it de-weaponizes these bad-faith arguments that anti-trans bigots try to spew. --- PoW '09 Topic of the Year Co-Winners (Rada and Texy) FFD ... An unattributed "they" in reference to a complaint is always "listener's choice". It divests the speaker of responsibility for specific finger pointing, and the listener instead fills in that blank of their own accord to whomever they think deserves to be there. And both the speaker and listener find themselves in pleasant "agreement". Even if they don't actually agree, they believe that they might agree.
