I'm Mexican and I can't stand the music. It's fine at a family gathering or at a Mexican restaurant with live music, but it's not something I would ever listen to on my own time.

It reminds me of the back of the house at a restaurant.
And also in my case, The Track.

I don't mind it.

Honestly... no. I can listen to Mexican music no problem, but a lot of the Mexican specific genres get really repetitive to me.

Like with Ranchera, Banda and Corrido, the bands in those genres all use the same instruments and it makes them sound so... Samey.

Reggaeton and Cumbia have a similar problem, where instead of the same instruments being used, it's the same exact drum loop/bass loop in every song.

So I can enjoy the music in small doses, but not for long periods of time. I love some of the more varied Latin genres though. Like Latin Pop, Latin Rap, Latin Jazz, etc.

based on what Mexicans tell me, its also a misnomer?

like, there is Mexican pop, Mexican ballads, Mexican rock, Mexican metal, etc, just like *gasp* many other countries, yet that one variant of music with the trumpets and hats and guys going like KEKEKEKEKE AAYYAAHHHA is what gets considered to be Mexican music in other countries.

itd be like disregarding all USA music except for country and calling country American music

TC asked about Vicente Fernandez and Pedro Infante. And yeah some moms like it but most people here don't listen to that unironically. It's usually the stuff you put to sing along as a joke when a party is way past over and everybody is real drunk.

Mexican music is the hat dance song, American music is Hotel California, Japanese music is the Madoka Magica theme song.

I think that's just from a lack of exposure. There are plenty of music genres that people enjoy in Mexico. But people from outside of the country won't really experience the music culture in full. Only bits and pieces of it.

I live in Los Angeles and while it's not the only Spanish music I hear, I do actually hear a lot of people playing Rancheras, Banda, Corrido, etc. You know, the genres that people typically view as "Mexican music"

I don't mind mariachi and actual historical/meaningful stuff, but I absolutely despise the stereotypical tuba bands that sing about getting drunk.

I prefer our pop, rock and so on. Stuff like caifanes, Alex syntek, caf Tacuba and the like.
