i am not convinced any hiring manager is gonna seriously read a cover letter, and I don't believe they are ever used to make an interview call decision. Like 'oh man this resume kinda lacking but this cover letter? So prosaic'

When I got my job, they said I was one of the few who bothered with a cover letter. For whatever that's worth. Not a super high barrier to entry job though.

I thought those were for when faxing to know where one started and another ended.

What is a cover letter?

They read it as a formality usually, but not put real weight into it. At most they probably just take it as a measure of how eloquent you might be.

I just hired someone who got an interview based off his cover letter.

its essentially what you said, his resume wasnt bad but it wasnt super competitive, his cover letter though was enough to get him a call which turned to a panel interview followed by an offer.

Of course the other 5 hired didnt have cover letters so I def dont think its necessary but it can do you some favors.

You're definitely wrong about cover letters not mattering though they are hardly necessary. Hiring managers will look closer at those with cover letters than those without

Yeah it might get you a look over the people that don't do them.
