Yeah, good luck getting any design jobs within the energy sector without at least a 4 year degree.
Thats exactly what I said.

A lot of jobs require a degree, but many dont even ask what the degree is in.

Yes, theres specialty jobs that require certain degrees, obviously. But do a quick job search and look at how many jobs have a requirement of just Bachelors Degree.

No, and joining the army today isn't as risky anymore as you seem to believe.

A) So if you don't believe this should be a thing, why are you arguing college loans should be abolished in favor of it?
B) I'm not sure that "we lowered the risk of injury and death you must endure for two years" is a great argument...

Sounds like an oversaturated market.
So you think we should let people with no thermal, electrical, or structrual design experience or education start working on our power generation equipment?

What could possibly go wrong?

And no, for the record; there's still lots of room for growth and opportunity in that field. One thing we dont need less of in the US is engineers atm

OK. But thats a very specific field that needs specific training and education.

Thats like saying you cant be a doctor on a liberal arts degree. Well, no shit.

But for your average sales, QA, or other random jobs, all you need is that piece of paper saying you passed college. A piece of paper thats proves nothing, because you end up getting trained for whatever job you get.

Thinking engineers are the only ones that should be working on those is a huge part of the problem my dude.
I dont consider it a problem that high temperature, high pressure systems are being worked on by people who are trained to work on them. And yes, that training should include education from an ABET accredited program. However, I also believe that people should not be priced out of access to these programs.

As a side note, what's your experience in this field, if you feel comfortable making judgements on who should be suitable to do the jobs?

I took out a student loan to pay for college. I paid my loans in full.

I am pro- student loan forgiveness. I can live with not receiving a benefit that someone else does because I'm not a crybaby.

So, just to be clear, are you doubling down on "only engineers should work on power generation equipment"?
Only engineers should be involved in the design of power generation equipment, yes. Not sure why you're acting like that's a controversial take that I'm doubling down on.

I think you kinda veered off the path a bit here beyond the original idea of College not really being necessary for most higher end jobs that a majority of people do.

Oh so you do agree that operating, managing and mantaining the equipment should not be done exclusively by engineers, great.
Weird tangent, since my original post was:

The government isnt gonna forgive my auto or house loans. They just take that shit back. Im fortunate enough to have athletic scholarships that paid for most of my college. Sorry not sorry but if you take a loan, you gotta pay that shit back.

Even as a Six Nations member I didnt get any hand outs unless I went to school in Canada because my tribe that started in New York and was forced off our lands into Canada. So the US government doesnt recognize our tribe. And in Canada, they pay for our books and nothing else because we arent a natural tribe.

So, pay your debts.

On your original post, you're speaking about a very specific job that has very specific requirements that need to be taught and certified.

But lets talk about things like Sales, Quality Assurance, Billing, etc. As long as there's someone with knowledge of whatever program the company uses that can train new hires, what would a 4 year degree do to help someone in a job like that? Yet SO many times its a prerequisite for application.

Like the example I gave. When my wife's job (she works in sample/specimen compliance for a pharma company) looks for new hires for Sales reps, QA Agents, etc., one of the requirements is a Bachelors Degree. Doesn't even matter what it's in. Why do you need one? Nobody knows. As I said, that 6 people she works with all have different degrees, and none of them were in any of the sciences.

Make it make sense.
