the art just looks incredible weird and basic but I've been out of the pokemon loop awhile .

there doesn't seem to be any cohesive art style in it. the lines around the eyes are especially jarring

At least the Klefki art was drawn by Sugimori himself and it's not like there hasn't been Pokemon based on inanimate objects even as far back as Gen 1.

This monkey was clearly drawn by someone else, and just don't mesh in well with even the main designs of this generation.

James Turner was an artist who was employed at Game Freak for a while and recently left. He designed Pokemon like Vanillish, Golurk, Mandibuzz, Naganadel, and others.

He left Game Freak some time before the release of Scarlet/Violet.

It's really not.
There's also two literal rats, monkey, monkey with gloves. And let's not forget radish.

Every gen had some really basic shit designs.
People are allowed to like them, but that doesn't mean the new gen is worse in some way. Design has always been hit and miss.

For me that moment was the Ice/Rock dinosaur evo in Gen 6. When I saw the big pre-release leak for its Pokedex I genuinely thought it was fake or looked like a Digimon. It's only been downhill since then.

People bringing up lazy designs like Voltorb, Grimer, and Diglett for bad Pokemon design but not how Gen 1 has THE ugliest Pokemon in the series with Jynx, Hypno, Electabuzz, Magmar, Mr. Mime,and Pinsir. I actually vomited at the sight of them as a kid once.

It's just one might say "Yeah, Gen 4 is where it started to SUCK ASS. Who was the new guy doing the art for that game?" and it's just Ken Sugimori again. I think some Pokemon like Luvdisc, Bronzor, and Nosepass look really really stupid. Something about the basic designs of Gen 1 make the dumb Pokemon look forgivable and less worthy of complaint then when I look at something like Vanillite or Garbador or Chandelure.

New Pokemon are just so busy, there's angles or swirls or puffs everywhere all the time, so it doesn't help when they're ugly and dumb looking.
