If you make less than $73k then the IRS provides you free software to fill out your forms. If you make more then that, they have a online manual form that auto calculates most of the boxes after filling out a few like your earnings from your w-2. https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free In both instances, you submit your return then in a couple hours you get an email either approving it or denying it . If it's denied, it'll state which box is incorrect and you can fix it, and resubmit. If you go the manual form route, you can take a copy of your previous year's return and use that as a guide. It's really not hard unless you have a lot of complicated stuff like multiple properties, stocks, and other things. The IRS support number is full of friendly and helpful people. You aren't going to get in trouble over a mistake.
