I recently found out Turbo Tax lobbying the government is why we have to file taxes and can't just get money back at the end of the year like a normal country would since the government already knows what it's taking from us.

My dad buys turbo tax every year and I go over to their house and use it to file my taxes.
He is also a CPA, so he double checks everything before I file it.

I have not, and will never, use any Intuit product.

I download the forms from the IRS website and fill them in on my computer.

I did this year (yesterday actually.) I usually file through H&R Block, but their 1099 importing from stock sales is a mess and I didn't feel like manually editing.

You don't have to worry about messing anything up.
If you make less than $73k then the IRS provides you free software to fill out your forms.
If you make more then that, they have a online manual form that auto calculates most of the boxes after filling out a few like your earnings from your w-2.
https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free

In both instances, you submit your return then in a couple hours you get an email either approving it or denying it . If it's denied, it'll state which box is incorrect and you can fix it, and resubmit. If you go the manual form route, you can take a copy of your previous year's return and use that as a guide.

It's really not hard unless you have a lot of complicated stuff like multiple properties, stocks, and other things. Go save yourself $80 man.

Yeah you don't want to fuck them over intentionally. The IRS support number is full of friendly and helpful people. You aren't going to get in trouble over a mistake. Now if you're trying to get away with tax fraud or whatever then yeah you should be intimidated.

Yeah, plus my husband looked into both of them and while all are scummy he felt Tax Act was the lesser of the 2 evils.

We never qualify for free filing.

Like I said in my previous post. You don't qualify for the free software but you can use the online fillable forms which are also free.

Yeah, but we have state tax as well so with Tax Act we only have to fill info out once. That online form specifically says no state.

We many times have a bunch of stock transactions so its easier with some of the import capabilities of Tax Act. A lot less work.

My parents buy the deluxe edition from a club warehouse for almost half-priced and I can file for free. I get more use out of it than they do since I can still itemize my deductions.
