You can get big SSDs now and put games and other stuff on them. I have a 2TB SSD with my OS and blizzard games and about half my steam library. Everything else is on a regular hard drive

2TB NVME SSDs should be about $150 now compared to 2 years ago when they were like $300 for just 1TB.

I have a couple HDDs that don't serve much purpose anymore except generic storage. It's gonna be a dead format soon.

HDDs are irrelevant

SSD prices just keep plummeting so you can get several TBs easily

I see. I thought HDDs were recommended for file storage due to the limited read/write life of SSDs, but granted, that was a few years ago and technology improves fast.

No, HDDs were never more reliable than SSD, since HDDs have moving parts, and moving parts are always less reliable than non-moving (it was mostly cost per MB of storage, and the fact you could have two or three backups on HDDs for the cost of one on SSD):

SSD'S are so cheap nowadays that there's zero reason to get platter HDD's outside of a dedicated 4 or 6 bay NAS you use for like system backups for long term storage of bullshit you never access.

EDIT: Also, I still use one of my original SSD's from 2013 (samsung 840 pro) as one of my storage/gaming drives. It has almost 450tb of writes to it and still works great. Speeds are basically the same as when I got it.

HDDs are still king for media but you'd know that already if you had that much to store

SSDs are pretty much all to care about

Cloud services are pretty good too. Hell, Amazon Prime has 'free' unlimited photo storage

your way is the most optimal, but because ssds are getting cheaper by the minute a lot of people just opt to go ssd solo

but they still aren't close to matching hhd's price per storage. 4tb of ssd is still like 200 dollars when you can get like 14tb of storage with 200 dollars

Then you must not have much data. I have tens of terabytes of shit and it would be insanely cost inefficient to store it all on SSDs. The only shit that belongs on SSDs are the OS, programs, and modern video games.

My previous laptop came with a 128GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. I used the HDD a lot at first, but then I upgraded the SSD to a 1TB and basically never used the HDD again except to back up files when reformatting, in the same way one might use an external HDD.

Based on this, pretty sure I'll be fine with the 1TB SSD (and nothing else) in my current device.

I do have a 5TB USB HDD for media though.

I think all new computers come with them. My older laptop from almost 10 years ago, had an HDD. Got a new one like 3 years ago and it's SSD now

They are just faster storage. It's the new technology

They existed around then, but weren't standard. They're universal now; some PCs still have a regular hard drive as well but you'll have a hard time finding a new PC that doesn't use an SSD as the primary drive these days.

SSD For OS, and HDDs to store important files is optimal for me.

I have murdered like 3 SSDs in two years as they can get pretty fragile the closer they get to filling up, so i say preserve them for the OS, or for game installs like MMOs that benefit from them more. Don't let them stay in red though.

HDDs are still freaking awesome, and I just got a docking station so i can be more organized with naked ones outside of the computer. 20 bucks for 4TB can't be beat. Also, love dropbox for cloud storage.

I guess it would depend on how much media you have and what you're willing to spend. For storing a shit ton of pictures and videos, HDD should be fine. Large SSDs are still overpriced as fuck.

Everything else SSD. All I have are 2 SSDs but I also don't have many large files to store other than games.
