Or write a note to get it back. This has a bit more nuance. when bullies physically assault other kids, are they sent to jail? (No) when a kid fearfully goes to the principal and snitches on kid A who is bullying him, and shows physical marks (eg black eye, swollen face, etc) does the principal call the cops on the bully? Im no fan of the school-to-jail pipeline that our system has built. I cant help to notice the kid well, lets just say he looks a certain way, would the cops have been called if he were, you know, looking more like a Tom Brady type?
