A 17-year-old high school student was arrested for allegedly attacking a school employee and knocking her unconscious after she took away his Nintendo Switch during class.

The Flagler County Sheriffs Office said the incident happened Tuesday (February 21) morning at Matanzas High School in Palm Coast. School resource deputies reportedly found a female paraprofessional lying on the ground bloody with severe injuries.

The boy told deputies he got upset after she took away his gaming console, according to an arrest report. Documents claimed the teenager said he will beat her up every time she takes away his game and when he comes back he is going to kill her.

Investigators reviewed surveillance footage, which reportedly caught the student, whos 66 and 270 pounds, walking fast at the victim. The 17-year-old then pushed the paraprofessional several feet, knocking her onto the school floor and leaving her unconscious.

Authorities said he started kicking and punching the unconscious victim several times in the back and head. Bystanders jumped in to protect the victim, who was rushed to a local hospital. No word on her condition as of Thursday afternoon (February 23).

The 17-year-old was arrested and charged with felony aggravated battery with bodily harm. He was booked into Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility and later turned over to the Department of Juvenile Justice, according to the sheriffs office.

Kids these days don't have any concept of delayed gratification, they want it now. I teach middle school and confiscated a girl's phone, she almost jad a neurological breakdown and stormed out of the room, I was going to give it back at the end of the period anyway but she couldn't even wait for an hour.

At most, it would probably be till the end of class Im not sure youre allowed to take someones property for that long. And worst case scenario, the parent can come get it back if the teacher didnt want to give it back

Idk If a teacher ever took anything, at least at my school, a parent could always get it back if the teacher didnt want to give it back... Or write a note to get it back. And most wanted it back if they had more than one child Though, only children would also have their parents come and get it for them

.fuck that. Till the end of class is one thing. Shit ain't cheap. I'd lean more towards warn them to put it away if they don't kick em out of class and do disciinary action.

When I was in elementary had a teacher who would take toys kids took to class and at the end of the year sell them to the other kids. You couldn't even buy your own toy back.

Having the parent come collect it is fine. But if the parent doesn't care either and just collects it every time, thats when further action needs to be taken

If the kid had a 1:1 para in a classroom he wasnt in a gen ed class setting and most likely is emotionally disturbed or has an IEP.

having said that, a kid that size should have an equally strong male in the class for this exact reason.

Agreed. Too many parents cave to their kids. Go stand outside the toy department of Walmart for long enough and you'll eventually see a parent cave to a tantrum. And it probably won't take long.

No Child Left behind is a disaster best summed up with "The Road to Hell is paved in good intentions." All it did was make it more profitable for schools to shuffle kids forward who were totally unprepared for the next grade. Baltimore City has gotten a wrath of shit from a local affiliate for that. And also keeping "ghost kids" on the books since they get funding per head. But now you get kids about to graduate who can barely fucking read, but the school is fine with it since if they fail too many kids they lose funding.

Had another at a different school she'd hold onto the toy for 6 months and taunt the child with how long she was gonna keep it from them.

I think sending them out of class is more appropriate. Half the time these kids didn't pay for the shit so the parent suffers too. You can raise your kid the best you can and they are still gonna do stupid shit.

I was meaning more like a week before its automatically returned, otherwise the parent can collect any time (and is told the reason why it was taken away to begin with so the parent can hopefully parent the kid). Not the extended timeframes that happen at some schools. extended timeframes is obviously wrong as well

I say end of day at worst or until the parent comes and gets it. But I really don't trust a teacher to properly store/protect property like that. It really isn't that hard for someone else to steal shit. Teachers ain't trained to be security minded as much as people in my line of work and they still get over on us sometimes

This has a bit more nuance.

when bullies physically assault other kids, are they sent to jail? (No)

when a kid fearfully goes to the principal and snitches on kid A who is bullying him, and shows physical marks (eg black eye, swollen face, etc) does the principal call the cops on the bully?

Im no fan of the school-to-jail pipeline that our system has built. I cant help to notice the kid well, lets just say he looks a certain way, would the cops have been called if he were, you know, looking more like a Tom Brady type?

I am happy this one kid is going to see consequences for his actions, but I still have overall concerns

Depending on how egregious it is, they absolutely can be arrested for assaulting another student. This was not a minor incident, and if he had done this to another student as well as following it up with a death threat then it very likely would have ended up the same way
