. The profitability in PC/Console in Q3 is also impacted by the amortization of game development costs for titles released with a lower ROI in Q1 and Q2, including the Saints Row reboot.

We have therefore increased management focus and efforts to optimize investments and efficiency across the group even further. To simplify, each project has to earn its right to exist, which means we will increase our efforts to put quality first even further, and make sure we create unique positive player experiences.

tl;dr non-corporate language version = not wasting another hundred million $$$ on shit anymore unless it's a practical guarantee otherwise

Volition was also removed from working on the IP again for the rest of eternity. Fairest of nexts.

Have they tried making not-shit games? That tends to be a better way to keep a series alive.

All they had to do to make money was remaster and release the first two games on modern consoles and PC

So many people want to play 1 and 2 again but they just want to pretend that those games don't even exist

GTA clones are basically a dead business at this point. These games are just too complicated to make now. Nothing has exceeded the GTAV which was in the 360 generation.

Both Agents of Mayhem and the Saints Row reboot still play like they're from the 360 generation. It's not good enough anymore.

I liked it when it went stupidly over the top from 3 and beyond, I had no interest in the reboot but I'll inevitably grab it on deep sale by the end of the year. Everything about it screams $10 on holiday sale.

Frankly, any amount of money spent on the reboot is too much money

The original game was an Xbox exclusive that never received a PC port so that may be why that was skipped although it's BC with Series X along with the 2nd game.

IDK what's with Volition lately with Agents of Mayhem and the reboot. I guess all the talent left.

I think it's more that they didn't have the capability to improve or build upon Saints Row the Third. Both of those games play awfully similar with a worse setting and personality.

Probably also why that and the later ones got remastered. Probably tied to that engine or something.

Saints Row was good for the time (mostly because it beat GTA to the punch for that generation) but it's definitely a 2006 game lol

First one I was insanely hyped for. I was watching stuff for it on Gametrailers for a long time before it came out. The online play seemed so damn cool, the story cool, the wackiness cool. What we got was some of the most bland online multiplayer around and wasn't all that stable. Still played the online a lot though and fairly enjoyed it. The single player experience was about the same although far more polished. Just kind of empty and nothing special. I would still call it a fun and good game though. Just got no where near my hype.

Second one was obviously a great game and did customization like no one has done prior or even after. The amount of effort put into the game was insane. Probably the most consistent in the series but I prefer the craziness of three and four to it.

Three and four are easily my favorite in the series for how insanely over the top they are. They are just always a blast to play. Four suffers a bit for being too linear up until late in the game when you finally unlock the open world. And even then the game is basically just an expansion pack to three rather than a brand new game. But when a game starts off by blowing up the world in the first minute of the game how can you have a problem with it?

Never played SR2 multi-player. After the first one I was so underwhelmed with the series I didn't bother to pick it back up until years later when the online was mostly dead.

First one was a solid enough online experience it was just pretty bland especially compared to some of the offerings around its time. It was mostly just a standard third person shooter with some character customization options. There was also some mode that had cars around if I remember correctly it was like a capture the flag type mode. That was aright but the third person shooter modes were far more stable and better received.

My expectation going into it was "aw shit GTA Online here we go" and what we got was just mediocre third person shooter modes. I still enjoyed it though. Hell maybe even more than GTA V's online mode.

I played the multiplayer of the first a couple of times. This was before Gears of War came out so we're talking early 360 with not much competition. Biggest 360 game was probably GRAW at that point?

Yes, I was referencing GRAW. But even beyond just third person shooters you had CoD4 Modern Warfare about to come out which was insanely great for its time. Or even CoD3's online already out which I even preferred over CoD4.

This is the biggest thing to me. The reboot didn't even need to exist. They had a damn time machine at the end! Easiest reset button in the world! There was no need to wipe the slate clean with characters we already had.

A time machine to do what with though? Travelling to another city to shoot mindless waves of enemies again?

The idea of a reboot was fine. But there's just nothing interesting to draw anyone into it. The story is boring. The setting is boring. The gameplay is boring. There's no real missed opportunity to wonder about. If they had the old cast it would just be a mediocre game with the old cast.

They went with a Gat Out of Hell ending for Agents of Mayhem and that game was also mediocre.

At the end of the day there was no real potential for these games anymore. They're still designing their games like it's still a decade ago. Probably because they don't have the budget to do anything better. They're certainly not going to get another opportunity after this.

They spent about $160 million across 3 years of something (def not developing a good game)so as of now they failed to break even.

I think if you are going to reboot a game series there needs to be an actual change up to justify it?

Even something like a cover system to just modernize things a bit. Saints Row could have been like a parody of a gritty reboot but also an excuse to make the combat and gameplay feel more weighty.

Everything about the project just seemed misplaced.
