The farm girl had a talent for controlling partial morphs if I remember right. Partial transition into bird should do the trick.

You have to touch animals before you can morphing into them. Harpies aren't real.

Cassie can control her body while she morphs to make it look beautiful/interesting and not like a nightmare. I'm pretty sure she can't morph into hybrid creatures though.

No, you morph into animals by acquiring their DNA patterns. Doing that requires a few seconds of physical contact and puts the animal into a trance. In the first book, Jake acquires a tiger morph after falling into a tiger pit at a zoo, then books it while it's hypnotized.
